Front Mounted Intercoolers are abit better for cooling the engine but are only recommended for BIG power mods in excess of 500bhp!
And the downside is that they create a large amount of Turbo lag!

Otherwise you stand the chance of actually slowing your car down

I've got a FMIC on my car but, if i was starting over i don't think i'd bother again unless i was going over 400bhp
I'd go for an sti 8 intercooler.
FMIC are a pain to fit, make your car more laggy and really do need a remap and a bigger turbo (if you have a td04-your is an sti so should be ok) to get the best out of them, my car was definatly slower when fitted, ok now with new turbo and remap.

What turbo are you running on your 94 sti ?
Dean you will have been in much the same situation as Danny,
MY99 UK Turbo, Danny was running a top mount with aTEK2 and was roughly pushing 275bhp... we fitted the front mount and we found the Hybrid to be a very straightforward install with no problems as such, and then he ran that for 3 months while waiting his next stage.... he has now had I think a VF28 fitted and has had a re-map to match the turbo to the car it has now lifted him to around 330bhp.... ok a top mount may squeeze similar figures but it is right on it's limit at that, the benifit with the FMIC as far as I can see is that it gives him more cool air than the top mount would making the whole highly tuned package much safer.

From what most people have said who have upgraded to a STI8 TMIC, it's capible of running good power gains but most poeple who have done it wished they'd gone for a FMIC. You have to mess around with custom made brakets, some have to have the clutch release spring assembly modified, you will have trouble finding one and if you do manage to find one they cost a bomb.
We had no trouble fitting mine, and I ran it for three months with no problems at all. You could feel Lag but this was no more than a split second but the car pulled better in the mid and top end. Plus the cost of front mount is cheaper than what you would pay for a 2nd hand STI8 TMIC.
Lom, you could change yours to a STI5 intercooler, nearly a strieght swap and a gain over the small one you have, I think Simb2 still has one for sale
