Mocom Racing removes the Imprezas understeer
After going against the grain and opting to stick with the standard suspension set-up on the STi it's now time for a change, it's served us well for 30k, lapping up all the miles the Nordschleife could through at it and completing many laps of circuits up and down the UK.
Perhaps it may have been a little quicker with a firmer set-up on the super smooth tarmac of somewhere like Silverstone but catch it on a bumpy lane and all you'd see is it's tail lights and let's face it this is where most driving takes place.
The MY05 chassis was blessed with the additional castor angle reserved for the early Spec C's which meant that understeer was always kept to a minimum but could it be improved upon? Could we remove all traces of understeer?
Before replacing the stock suspension we fitted Noltec's adjustable top mounts to the front of the STi and here's the results; zero understeer and razor sharp turn-in
Just check out that castor angle, over 6 degrees

Zak, that looks great
Given that you set my car up originally, with approx 3.5 degrees castor (D2 coilovers), can you tell me if swapping the top mounts is all thats required to get it to what you show above? would it eliminate the need for the anti lift kit?
It was awesome when you set it up last time so am looking forward to bringing it back down again soon.

Fitting these top mounts to an earlier car will see somewhere between 4-5 degrees of castor, over 6 degrees is only achievable on the later STis with revised chassis.
Fitting of the top mounts is prefereble over the ALK not only because it provides a greater increase in castor angle, approx 1.5 degrees over 0.5 degrees, but it does not cause any unnecessary strain on some components as can be seen with the ALK. That's not to say the ALK doesn't work and yes it could be added in addition to the top mounts.
The blobeye will see the same, around 4 to 5 degrees.
Inclusive cost is £380.00, this includes vat, choice of top mount, fitting and a full alignment set-up to your requirements.

Thats cool, mines an 03 WRX so should see some decent gains.
Will be booking in in the new year
Also i have just purchased a 22mm rear arb, would you recommend a front one to compliment it?

i tink excesive camber kills tyres, what zak has posted above only has 1 degree negative camber, which is not a massive amount.

Castor doesn't have a direct negative effect on tyre wear, the main culprit is static camber which is often dialled in to improve corner grip. A greater positive castor angle increases dynamic camber negating the need for excessive static camber.
The settings above were for a track event, I run less camber than this on the road which maximises straight line stability and grip more so under braking which is very important with the current conditions, increased static camber will reduce this effect.
A geometry set-up or alignment, how ever you'd like to term it, can be carried out by anyone with the knowledge and correct equipment whether it be here at Mocom Racing, PowerStation or TSL. Bumpsteer measurement is something over and above a basic geometry set-up but it's good that you mention it We now have the facility to measure bumpsteer accurately, we can produce a plot of how your toe and camber camber angles change throughout the compression, and extension of your suspension, this saves us having to hang from underneath watching the toe change on the screen and trying to remember where and by how much.
I have some screen shots somewhere I'll post up when I get a chance.

Thanks, sorry for all the questions on your thread.
Only asking cause I'm hoping to visit you before xmas to have a few things done but there's only so much available funds so it's deciding on where to divert them to

For the record Zak does all the work on my 2002 STI. We're running with the Noltec topmounts at the moment and have 5.5 degrees of castor.
You can actually see in this picture how much more the bottom of the front wheel kicks out on turn-in due to the increase in castor over that of a stock STI.
