Default Nippon Challenge rounds 3 and 4 @ Snetterton 30th May

Over the bank holiday weekend at the end of May, the Nippon Challenge rolls into Norfolk for rounds 3 and 4 of the 2010 Nippon Challenge.

The second event of the season is to take place on this fast and unforgiving circuit. The two long straights of “Revett” and “Senna” will see the faster car’s reaching speeds approaching 150mph.
The track has seen a lot of resurfacing in preparation for the 2010 season, and is expected to continue being a circuit that is a real test of man and machine.

The weekends racing is organised by the BRSCC, and looks to provide an exciting programme of events. There is planned racing from the Open Sports Series and Dunlop TVR Challenge, along with fast-paced single seat action scheduled from the club's Formula 3 series.

Other action includes the Porsche Challenge, and the BARC South East Saloon Car Championship.
There will be a full and varied days racing, so if your local, why not pop along for an enjoyable day and support the Subaru contingency.
Tickets £12 on the gate, £10 in advance.

Default Vaughan Fletcher No:15 Snetterton 30th May 2010 Rounds 3 and 4

Vaughan Fletcher: No:15 GT300 Subaru Snetterton May 30th 2010

Race Day:

Vaughan and the team made the drive down to Snetterton on Saturday in preparation for the race on Sunday, and joined some of the fellow Nippon Racers in the paddock.

The weather was sunny, however the winds were fierce, and the rain clouds were never far away.

The weekends racing was organised by the BRSCC, and it looked to be an exciting programme of events. There was planned racing from the Open Sports Series and Dunlop TVR Challenge. There was also fast-paced single seater action from the club's Formula 3 competition.

Other action included the Porsche Challenge, and the BARC South East Saloon Car Championship.

Qualifying:

The Nippon grid was looking down on numbers with just 17 cars. Notably absent was Maxim and his Super GT/GT500 RX7. After talking to him at Mallory he was favouring to sit Snetterton out in place of Combe. Maxim suffered terminal engine damage here last year, and was keen not to have a repeat performance.

Each class, with the exception of GT150 had a decent enough class size to produce some close group racing.

GT 300 class was made up of:

04. Spencer Turner Subaru Sti
15. Vaughan Fletcher Subaru Impreza RA
44. Ian Froggat Subaru Impreza RA
51. Steve Burke Nissan 350z

Spencer with his Triton Motorsport prepared car was back following a DNF in the opening race at Mallory, and would be looking for better results. Following some significant changes since Mallory, Ian too would be hoping to improve on his 6th place overall which he achieved in race 2 at the Leicestershire circuit.

Martin White was out for the first time this season with his Subaru Cup car, along with Darren and David in the other SC cars. With the front running GT250/GT200 cars added to the mix, it would make for an interesting race at the head of the pack.

With a close grid, a good qualifying slot was important.

With fewer cars on track, and with it being a longer circuit than Mallory, the cars were spaced out, which allowed for good “fast laps”.

When the results came in, we were again over the moon to see that Vaughan had qualified 1st on the grid for the second time, and alongside Vaughan was the other ScoobyClinic car of Ian Froggat.

Race 1:
(Round 3)

Starting from 1st place on the inside of the grid Vaughan got a good start, but suffered from clutch slip, which meant Ian took the lead. Over the next 5 laps, Ian and Vaughan battled between themselves for first place, with Vaughan eventually coming out on top, although by now the clutch had begun to slip badly.

Ian’s power steering fluid reservoir had also emptied its contents all over his windscreen, as it had done in qualifying, which meant he slipped back down the grid to 4th.

By this point, both Subaru’s had pulled out a lead on the chasing pack, meaning Vaughan was able to reduce his attack, whilst still maintaining the race lead.

The remaining laps were a mixture of driving fast enough to keep the lead, but not too hard that the clutch wouldn’t last, and see him out of race 2. Vaughan took the race and GT300 class win with a 25 sec lead over second placed Steve in his 350z.

Race 2:
(Round 4)

Starting again from 1st place on the inside of the grid, there were a number of absentees. Ian’s Subaru had failed to start for race 2 leaving an empty slot for 4th place.

With the clutch still borderline, it was any bodies guess as to how the car would launch, and whether it would see the race out.

As the race was about to get underway the heavens opened, and rain fell heavily, leaving no time to change to a wet set up. This would make for an interesting race.

Vaughan took the lead when the lights went green, but with the rain getting heavier on lap 1 the circuit was getting increasingly greasy.

On lap 2, Vaughan was heading into Sears, when the combination of freshly laid tarmac, and torrential rain came into affect, which caused him to spin. Quick thinking allowed him to recover, and rejoin still holding 1st place.

With the rain still falling, the other drivers behind Vaughan were spinning all over the place.

On lap seven, the biggest incident of the race took place, which resulted in a red flag to clear up the mess.

Martin White in his Subaru Cup car, and Paul Hughes in his GT250 Buddy Club Integra were battling hard and trading paint all around the circuit. Martin was trying hard to defend against Paul with his tyres going off. On the run into Riches, Martin got wide (pushed?), and span out when he caught the back of the curb on the exit. The resulting spin collected Paul in the Teg, taking them both out and ending the race for both cars.

With the rain now really heavy, the re-start was under 2 green flag laps, followed by a grid start for approx 6 mins race time left.

At the restart, Vaughan took the lead ahead of Stewart Hutchinson in his GT200 Integra, and the remaining laps were taken gingerly, making sure not to spin on the corners.

Vaughan took the race and GT300 class.

With race 2 red flagged, the timing and results were reset for the final 4 laps.

Finished 1st in class
Finished 1st overall
Fastest lap: 1.34.918 sec on lap 4 of 4 (Timings taken from re-start)

Pos 1 Vaughan Fletcher
Pos 2 Stewart Hutchinson
Pos 3 Darren Hughes

Summary:

Overall a fantastic race meet for Vaughan, but there are now a few problems that need to be rectified before the next meeting.

With the new venue of Castle Combe only a matter of weeks away, the season is hotting up.
