Airfield days in the South
#1
Hi Folks,
I'm trying to get an idea of Airfield locations in and accessable from the South. At the moment it looks like Kemble and Bruntingthorpe are the two most obvious options.
Are there any others and who runs days at these places?
Reason for asking is I'm trying to convince a mate of ours with an M3 that he should get it off the public highways to see what it really can do, without paying circuit money.... (cheapskate I know )
cheers,
dela

I am in Bournemouth and have done Bentwaters a couple of times now. Bit far though, so if anyone finds anything in the south would be very interested.
Something on the coast would be ideal.
Anyone know about Thruxton? IIRC it is expensive to hire out hence none of the BAT/Easytrack etc can do it cost effectively.

I think the problem with Thruxton is the noise limit too - or the number of events they're allowed to hold or something.
I got their driver training brochure, and it's very very expensive compared to other places, so I'm giving it a miss.

Yes Thruxton is very sensitive when it comes to noise (I am an Instructor there at the Racing School). It's one of the most challenging and gutsy circuits in the UK - still the fastest road track (as opposed to Rockingham Oval). You can do an hour on track there, running on a School day in your own car for £100.
We (www.motorsport-events.co.uk) are running days at several venues (including Bruntingthorpe on 16th March). We are offering an Introductory price at a great track called Llandow (near Cardiff) of £99 and as a further incentive this includes 30 mins of free tuition from a professional Instructor.
Have fun!

Hi Ed,
I remember you from Thruxton when I came and did a Ferrari day. Your instruction in the MGF was top, I'd gladly have you instruct in my Scooby.
Thruxton is indeed a very quick circuit - its a shame they don't let you cane the Ferrari's like we did the MGF.
Is Llandow a proper circuit? Are you running days on weekends or just weekdays?
cheers,
Dave

Hi Dave,
Glad you remembered me from Thruxton. Those MGF's weren't too bad really! I will always let my pupils have lots of fun, if they respond well to instruction - it's much more rewarding then for me too.
I still work at Thruxton now and then - it's good fun, it is the only civilised Race School left in my opinion having worked at lots of them over the last 7 years. I spend most of my time now working on our track day business and away for various car manufacturers on launches, training days and driver training projects.
Llandow was an active circuit from 1960 until 1976. It held top level National meetings back then and was a very exciting track with the 2nd fastest average speed in the UK. I have lots of family history attached to the place - my Dad was Welsh Motor Racing Champion in 1974, won the last ever race there (Sep. '76) and still holds the circuit lap record - sorry for that Dad!
I am therefore keen to promote the venue and loce the place. It was used for the odd Sprint and corporate day, but the track surface became very poor until last year when it was totally resurfaced!
It is now very smooth, a good fun layout, with a mixture of slow, medium and fast corners. It is a short action packed lap. Alreday several top race teams have begun to use it as a regular test track.
As a promotional offer we are offering alll day on track (March 29th), with 30 mins of free instruction (from top quality Professionals - not part timers) for just £99.
If you want a place let me know ASAP. It would be great to sse you again.
Cheers,
Ed

<Easytrack (easytrack.co.uk) do Kemble - dates will appear on their site shortly, they're getting around a couple of issues at the moment so I'm told.>
Not according to my info, they are looking at other venues.

That's a shame, had a fun day there last Sept in the rain on the fresh tarmac, and a corking bacon sandwich in the control tower.
I'll keep my eyes peeled on the Easytrack site, as would like to do some airfield time in the South - looking at the site Ed recommended earlier in this thread too.
Thanks,
Simon.
