Any Hillclimbs or Sprints in the Near Future?
Just curious if folks know of a hillclimb or sprint that one can participate in with a Subaru?
If not, any good websites with info?
By the way, I'm near Cambridge.
Thanks
Tim

Dan,
The Association of West Midlands Motor Clubs has a small speed championship, with both sprints and hillclimbs, for rules and calendar for last years season see here
http://www.awmmc.org.uk/modules.php?...download&cid=2
The South of England is usually a bit busier if you can make the journey down, some of these hopefully wouldn't be too much of a trek:
http://www.ukmotorsport.com/acsmc/pd...d_calendar.pdf
As you can see the season is pretty much over now - next years calendars should be up early in the new year, and the season will kick off again around Feb/Mar. Plenty of time to find more bhp - and more importantly - tweak that suspension
As Andy mentioned, I'm interested in trying to set up a little Japanese intermarque competition, trying to group the 4wd Japanese saloons together, should make an interesting class of competition. I've already got some interest from the Evos and Skylines, and intend to try to pursue some of the Pulsar/Sunny GTiRs - if I can get enough interest. The more people I can get interested now the more chance I have of making it happen!

I would be interested in doing some form of motorsport with my car, really do need to do something to enjoy it more!
However the only thing that would put me off at the moment is doing anything that requires a cage as the car is still my daily driver at the moment.
Dan.

Thanks for the replies!
Glad to see there are some activities available for a road car.
I've been to Snetterton and that was a ball. Looking for some different experiences and the hillclimb and sprint appear to be just the thing.
I will keep an eye out next year!
Thanks

Is there likely to be a standardish class amongst these? Am interested in going a little beyond trackdays in my coilovered WRX, but am not likely to spend big money on the engine. Based in Cambridge.

Great to see some replies, thanks to all for joining in.
Hopefully try to answer most of the questions, if I've missed anything, just ask away:
The events we organise do not require cars that compete in road-legal form to have a roll cage. In fact, you can just roll up in your standard motor and compete. There are separate classes for standard and modified cars, and as modification gets greater things like roll cages are encouraged (although not mandatory). Fireproof overalls and helmet are mandatory, but once bought these should last a long time.
The class structure is still "to be defined". The number of classes we can run depends on the level of interest we can muster - hopefully by appealing to a range of cars (get the evos, skylines, pulsars involved) we can get a decent class set up and running. I can see scope for perhaps three classes:
1. Standard car class, with the following modifications only:
- wheels +1 inch in diameter
- tyres from MSA list 1A (basically a list of standard road tyres, excluding specialist sticky trackday tyres)
- springs and shocks free
- exhaust and induction free
- standard ecu - may be remapped but to a max of 1.1 bar/300bhp
2. Road going modified (equiv. to current class A)
- must be road legal and have current MoT
- standard suspension pick up points and geometry
- standard engine block, cylinder head and transmission castings
- must have complete shell, and retain profile of vehicle
3. Modified (equiv. to current class C)
- Anything goes (almost!) class
The idea would be to produce a list of "acceptable" cars for classes 1+2 (e.g. for imprezas based on something like the SIDC FAQ list). This is only my opening gambit, all of this is up for debate.
To give you an example of an airfield venue, here is something kwakman posted up recently from our event on 25th Sept. http://www.stjives.co.uk/scoob2.wmv Be warned - it is a 5MB download, not suitable for people on dial-up! As you can see, the airfield is very open - if you fall off the course, you will probably run out of fuel before you hit anything. Sprints also take place at circuits, and there are also hillclimbs to do if you aren't too concerned by trees at the side of the circuit
Andy, kwakman (my brother) is based Cambridge way, excellent location for access to various motorsport meetings!

I have a friend with a recently rebuilt GT4 ST185 that might be interested. Would be good to get some of the GT4OC along as well and have a real intermarque championship.
From the look of that list i will prob end up in class 2 or maybe even 3 with the ammount of mods i have now .

Sprintchief - this sounds great. Very interested in the 'standard' class. Would these classes be hosted by an established club, if so which one and do they meet at various venues in south of England?
I'll mention it to my local mechanic, if the 300ZX is likely to be eligible too.
Would be interested to meet kwakman - see you at a Fen Ditton pub meet sometime perhaps? Where's the trackday tomorrow, and is it fully booked yet?
cheers

Wow, lots of good ideas out there!
I'd agree GT4's, 200SXs and 300ZXs would be in the spirit of the event, and sounds like a great idea. We need to be careful how we tailor the rules to ensure people have a reasonably level playing field, an independent expert on each make of car would probably be useful to define the rules.
Still quite a lot to think through, in terms of a club there are several options - I am competition secretary of the Harrow Car Club, which organises sprints, there is also the option of setting up a separate, dedicated club or arranging it through regional motorsport associations, so many options.
Looks like I might have to stop making excuses and actually get on and organise things

Things to think about.
How these cars fit into classes, as they are they are fine for most 2.0L turbo Jap Cars
Mitsi FQ range, & GTO's
2.5/2.6 L Skylines
300Z, 350Z
Honda R's

It'd be great to have the SXOC on board. You'd be at a disadvantage if it rains but then some 4WD Jappo tintop usually gets FTD anyway, even when there are wings-and-slicks on the course.
As getting entries is always the hardest thing to do, I'm sure we can find a home for most Lice Lockets that are interested. I think the more variety the better. The class structure needs careful consideration as I've seen up close how competitive people get in a motorsport environment and then the rules suddenly become very important.
We are off to a good start though as Sprint Chief already organises 2 sprints per year that we could have a class in and see if it takes off from there. Not having anything to hit around North Weald is also an added bonus as it means trashing the car is actually quite hard (We wont mention the one 205 that *cough* somehow rolled on a completely flat bit of tarmac )

Really looking forward to possibility of sprinting next year, having done another day at Bruntingthorpe on Saturday. New suspension worked well, lots of fun and learnt new skills and more about the car in safety. Top day out!
There's a regularish pub meet of Cambridge area scoobs, we should get together next time to talk about sprints!

Roy's Evo 5 is something else on track.
911 is one of the nicest blokes you will ever meet - he has been very helpful and generous in giving me advice.
Loton Park is near Shrewsbury and well worth a visit.

Oops! Sorry to have prematurely aged you Richard
I have met Graham once, when we both had our cars mapped by Andy Forrest and I agree he's a really nice bloke.
Shrewsbury's about 120 miles from me so could 'pop' over just to take a look. Can't enter as my car doesn't have a cage and I'm in two minds about fitting one.

I ran an Evo 6 GSR (no cage) in 2003 and a Peugeot 205 GTi with a cage in 2005.
Roy's Evo 5 and quite a few others in the "Road Going" class do not have a cage fitted.
PM me if you want anymore info - too many "opinions" on here.

Guys
Keep an eye open for the inaugral Scooby Speed Challenge that I am organising. Will take in at least 6 events - 3 sprints and 3 hillclimbs and around the South/ Midlands.
I am also looking into the possibility of hiring a venue to practice - especially for those that have never gone sprinting before - trying for Curborough.
Cheers

Weve got 2 dates for 2006 (May and Sept) at North Weald now; looking to expand on that number. Very convenient transport links (M25 and M11) and perfect for the novice competitor; absolutely nothing to hit, as Gerry will tell you.
#27
May and September dates are both provisionally in as the third weekend in each month. We might also have a lead at Debden, details to follow shortly in the new year. These are all events that are well known and well subscribed, we will be running the Jap intermarque class within them.
