Default shock absorber issue

I have been experiencing clink/thudding noises in my scooby recently and the car hasn't felt the same to drive. Just been to see mechanic and he recons the shock is buggered, though he couldn't get into the part where the actual shock is due not being able to get the rear seats down and not a lot of time..but we jacked up the car, bounced the wheel up and down and you could hear the thudding very clearly where the shocks are located. it also felt too free. anyhow..........are the 2005 subaru impreza gx supplied with Bilstein shocks? ive heard rumors that these are crap? I need help to find a rear passener shock cheap as chips any suggestions?? thanks guys

An 05 has some years on it, and given age just about any damper would have worn out by that point.

the other thing to consider looking into is the top hats as they will be worn as well. If you are looking to replace the dampers see if you can swing top hats in the budget as the labor to put them on will be minimal as you have to take all that apart anyway to replace the dampers.
