Default Replacement struts Type R

Just had MOT and one of the OE rear shocks is not performing as well as it should.
Don't want coilovers as the roads are bumpy and I'm getting old and have a dodgy back lol so looking at gettting OE struts/springs.
Don't particularly want to buy 2nd hand suspension either but it is an option.
Does anyone know the difference between the P1 struts (which i believe you can still buy) and the Version 4 Type R struts?

Any help appreciated

Not sure of the specifics but they are definitely different.

There is a guide on how to fix this yourself. You can buy new but it will cost a fortune and will more than likely not be the same as what you have.

V4 struts are black, twin tubed, the 'right way up', and the V5/6 are red, monotubed, inverted and red coloured

Thanks Bonesetter ,sort of knew that but thanks for confiriming it.

So I guess the red struts are the same whether UK or JDM spec?

Just a bit worried if I go with red struts that they will eventually suffer the knocking that seems to plague them.

If you can find a low mileage set then you should be ok. I changed mine to V5 Type R struts this year with 70k on them and I've not had any issues with them.

I've been running the red struts combi'd with P1 springs on my Type R to great effect, for fast A/B road hooning. I bought them new from a dealer I liked them so much. They're not the same as the aftermarket KYB ones available from Camskill etc it must be noted.

Worth sticking with as they are a decent damper, despite the knock issue

Ok cheers guys think I may look at picking up a set then.

If you could possible indulge me further what about these?

http://www.japanparts.com/db/partsli...aker=4&VOLKEY=

Scroll down the page as they do different struts.

Yes I know they would be expensive to ship ,but I could possibly blag it through my work.

Hi,

Why not buy these. I have them on my Type R with Red P1 Prodrive Springs. Handles like a dream. They are also half the price of the Red STi units.

Hope this helps.

Y-E-S Sirree!

Deffo those - brilliant damper, serviceable too. A little firmer than the red's, but great for UK B road hooning

Agreed with Bonesetter, if you can get ahold of a set of Bilsteins, they are a superior strut to the KYB V5/6 strut. Way back when, when the V5/6 strut was super cheap, it was great value to buy but getting them new is just much too expensive, IMO. Sure, if you can find a super low mileage used set for 100 GBP, why not but the new price is staggering. I don't even have a GC and I've been tempted to buy a set of these rare Bilsteins just in case I ever decide to get another one!

Yes, I did. Nice chap from the rally School near Knighton

For £600 they're the right money. I know Prodrive sold off a load a few years back for peanut money, which I suspect these are, but still worth it considering a new set of reds are £1300

They will be going on in about 2 weeks (pay day lol).
Will reuse the standard springs (for the moment)
I will be renewing some of the bushes (Track Control Arms) as they are on their way out and will be replacing the rear drop links (all Whiteline products).
