Short and sweet answer lol.... any explanation as to why not? to short, too long, too wide etc... as i would have thought they would have. But then I tend to be wrong anyway... However knowing the reason would be good

Actually, its the rears that do not fit. Front spring shape is the same from the Classics to the last GD. The rear top mount shape changed after the bug eye as did the rear spring shape.(Actually rear tophat on Classic is also different to the following years) Also the rear strut design changed as well. Subaru changed the upper spigot shape (threaded portion) as well. So, for example, any of the struts made for the bug-eye (AGX, D-Spec, Koni bug eye) will not work without the new tophat and spring. If you install a blob-eye + tophat on a bug eye you will get knocking noises because they hat doesn't fit properly. You can use a spacer to get it to work, however.
