im no expert, but mine has the same problem on the left hand side, after looking at previous MOT advisory's, and having a feel around on the ramp, i diagnosed it as an anti-roll bar drop link. hope this helps, dan

Had a similar knocking on my classic which was due to worn anti-roll bar bushes.

The symptoms don't sound exactly right, but if the bushes / drop link don't look shot, it could be a wheel bearing or drive shaft - like I said though these normally only occur on one side or when the wheel's turned in one direction rather than both.

I had a metallic whirring noise at slow speeds on the driver's side which was a wheel bearing. £140 at the dealer to fix. I had a driveshaft go on a previous car which was more like a knocking noise.

Good luck with the diagnosis - let us know how you get on.

I had a similar problem, on my 01 bug, used to rattle at slower speeds over bumps etc. changed the drop links and the problem was solved. Not to difficult a job to do either. I have also changed the anti roll bar bushes for good measure as well, but that was a little more time consuming grrrrr.

I get a lot of rattle and sounds like its in the steering column when I go over bumps! It's annoyed me for the last 12 months - you reckon I can resolve this by changing my front droplinks ianc61?

Sounds very similar problem to the one I had, I used these and the problem was solved. I can not guarantee it will sort but am pretty confident. Import WRX & STi Impreza Turbo Front Drop Links 01 on on eBay, also, Subaru, Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 13-Apr-09 12:58:10 BST)

Just diagnosed and fixed this very problem on my car (just posted about it actually). Mine were uprated Whiteline KC39 links that were less than 3 months old and they were rattling the car over bumps - disapointed with their quality but i guess they are meant for track use... shame they cost me a packet!
If you do uprate yours be careful with Rose Joint types - seems the original Subaru part offers much better protection against dirt and leakage of grease and they are as solid as Whitelines too.
