Default sti rear shocker knock!!!!

Hi heres this thread again!!!
Blob eye STI number 3 driving today and there it is that knocking from the n/s rear strut had this with every STI uk 04, 05, and now my 03 JDM luckly the last times the cars were under warranty but not this time! So where's the best place to get good cheap replacements??? and do they have to be for a JDM as this car feels a lot stiffer than the uk's?
cheers sye

i'm sure someone was selling spec C suspension a few weeks back, that would be the same isn't it?

This old chestnut. Why the heck Subaru didn't sort it out on the later cars is beyond me. I had it on my 03STI and yet it is still happening on the cars being sold 2 and half years later.

Anyway I think if you want rid of the knock permanently you need to go down the third party route. Mine were replaced twice under warranty and the knock just came back 6 months later each time.

Good opportunity for an upgrade maybe?
I got some (not cheap) coilovers for mine and the rear left lasted 9 months!
Got it sorted under warranty - hopefully it was an isolated incident.
Can't say I am that confident though.

happened to my p1 and went for a set of KYB adjustables there a well priced and i can not fault them, plus with the change can fit some whiteline bits (rear anti roll bar, rear alloy drop links and an anti lift kit) i had all that fitted and it made a massive difference to the handling of the car.

Changed mine recently on my 03 JDM. I used KYB Ultra SR which were identical to the OE ones that came off apart from being gold in colour. Around £200 from Camskill.

Can anyone confirm that the Spec C shocks are KYB Ultra SR's too?

Regreased mine using red 'sticky' grease (castrol product), still fine 6 months later, 45 minutes of my time and less than a tenner!

ive been through three n/s rear shocks in past 5 years! ironically i drive quite sensibly and virtually never have rear passengers yet they still start to knock. Lifted the sleeve this time and sprayed some wd40 in there and is seems to have helped ... no moaning/knocking/creaking for past three months ???? suabru have let this problem continue for many many years and it is probably the only complaint i have with them

Mine is in to the dealer tomorrow for suspension problems , i hope i get it sorted asap. Its very disconcerting to drive it with the noise coming from the back. Its the only thing i can complain about regarding Subaru.

Exactly what does this mean?
Can the suspensions be greased to "assist" in stopping this problem?
If so what exactly is meant by "lifiting the sleeve" and how do you do it?
Wouldn't mind doing this just in case.

Thx

Simon is right, he pointed me at this and it works.

Had the same problem with my STI struts and this sorted them out.

Basically the grease goes hard and stops working, mine was like beeswax when we took it out.

if you look under the wheel arch you will see sleeves which cover the damper

lift the sleeve with one hand and get some lube in there. Probably a little easier if car is jacked but it is as straight forward as you get

HELP!!!
I've got an 06 WRX with rear driver side knocking that's got much worse last couple of weeks. Took it to a Subaru specialist who's pretty sure it's the shock absorber. Subaru are quoting a price of £280 + VAT just for the part. This seems a lot, in comparison with some of the other models. I'm presuming this greasing you talk about won;t help as the knocking is quite bad, can't understand it though it's only done 22,000 miles and I drive it reasonably sensibly. Can anybody advise where I can get the part cheaper??

and also, do i have to use these specific shock abosrbers? can i opt for cheaper ones?

I would say the Ultra SR's feel the same as the OEM ones. It's hard to give a direct comparison as the ones it replaced were well worn, but I'm very happy with them.

+1 for re greasing them!!

The best way though is to take them apart completely, and grease the entire shaft within the strut casing body. Spraying wd-40 on the shaft will also help quiet them for a bit, but after time dust and road debris will begin to stick to the shaft, then bind against the seal causing stiction.

If you take them apart, and grease them up again internally, you wont have this problem

I repacked mine with grease as well, after 1 month the clunk was back. Total waste of time cos the damage to the bush was done.
Changed the whole lot out for coilovers
