Default How do you examine worn shocks?

How do you check a shock has packed up.
My classic clonks like mad at the rear .
I've had conflicting advice. A mechanic friend said that if I jacked the car up and then tried to lift the wheel up into the arch I shouldn't be able to move it . I did this and there was easily at least an inch free vertical play on the shock BUT I took it for an MOT on monday and it passed .
Any shock gurus out there ??
