Thumbs down replaced sti rear shock absorbers - the list

dont know if this has been done before - how about a comprehensive list showing how many of us - and how many times - have had the standard rear shockers replaced due to "knocking" problem.

Both - twice

first set: July 2005 @ 18000 miles (warranty)

second set: October 2007 @ 39000 miles (paid myself)

After second set there was still a knock. Then got top mounts replaced. At last OK!

come on guys - the number of posts on here refering to this problem are too numerous to mention. are you afraid to admit your car suffers from this. perhaps if we stuck together and put some weight behind our complaint we might get something done about it.
why should we pay to put right what is an obvious design fault?

2003 JDM STi

Nearside rear started knocking after 11,000

Replaced with second hand pair one started knocking 7000 later
Replaced with Modded pair from Scoobyclinic one knocked within 500 miles
Replaced again with one from Scoobyclinic one knocked within 500 miles
Replaced again with one from Scoobyclinic knocked after 2000 miles

Now driving with with the knock as I dont want to replace them again just for it to go again!!

Next step it a KYB replacement at about £120 a corner

MY05 WRX

NSF replaced at ca. 26k miles. Both rears recently replaced at ca. 34K miles.

Interestingly, even though both rears had gone, the noise was intermittent which, my dealer told me, was unusual. The fault clearly showed when the car was up on the hoist and the rear ARB pulled.

The mechanic (a good one!) also said that he thought that since the replacement part had a different number from the original it was probably a different design. On the other hand, he admitted that he'd had some in for the replacement to be replaced...

My STI has had at least 3 NSR ones, it does make you wonder if it is the shocks, it could be the top mounts????

Hi Greatwhite,
Afraid not, on the many times these went on and off my car I fitted different mounts, springs everything and changed the combination of mount/strut etc to isolate the item at fault. Shockers where definitely the cause of the knock.

You say that SC replaced them, what did they replace them with genuine Subaru or aftermarket?

Would coilovers or complete different set up work?

SC offer a exchange service for a "modified" strut which was supposed to solve the problem.

had the nearside one changed again last week - however because i made a contribution towards the previous replacement (50%) it carried a warranty of 3 years and was therefore done foc.
now on 4 nearside rears & 1 offside rear
not bad for a car thats 5 years old.
