Default Can you have it too stiff?

HI all, Just wondering if anyone has found that you can go overboard with suspension too stiff leading to scary handling?

I'm currently building my car, have fitted coilovers(Tein Type Flex), and top braces up to now. I am now looking at ARB, ALK and bushes droplinks etc.

I was thinking of fitting the spherical droplinks to the front and possibly the rear, with 22mm ARBs, full bush kit and the ALK (or would camberbolts be a better option?) Would this be overboard in anyones tried and tested opinions?

Car will not be used for daily drives, but Trackdays/runs out.

Thanks

Adam

You can make it too stiff for sure - depends on the quality of the tracks / roads you will be on.

Tein have a rep for being on the hard side.

But what your doing does not sound over the top.

Too stiff = slow
Too soft = the same.

Getting it just right is tricky but worth the effort to say the least and can be ok on the road too.
Choose your spring rates carefully as well as the damping range to suit.

Graham

ps: It has taken me 2 years to get it just right.

Thanks,

Have a feeling that the springs may be too hard, but as the full coilovers were only 550 brand new, I dont see too much of a problem getting softer springs if needed then

Will plunge for the whole hog then. are the rear adjustable arms and front lower H brace advised too, or is that a little excessive? trying to keep the car as light as possible (especially unsprung)

Graham, Have you got a DCCD controler sorted yet? is it 5 or 6 speed you need again?

IMHO:
The lower front brace is only worth while when you have removed all the rubber fron the chassis, everything is then stiff.
If there is rubber in there, the critical bits will be moving around under load.

If you have a classic, then i would go for 60/50 rates (Fr/Rr)
OK on the road, great on the track.

I have everything for the dccd now except the Subaru pink relay, but you can wire-in an after market one which i have.
The trans is all but done now except for the dccd electrics.

What a game it's been. Thank goodness for API Engines!

Adam give Dale a call at Diggle motors, his business partner Nigel has a RB5 and i asked him this question about suspension. Nigel has replaced his with KYB suspension which i think is original equipment, plus anti sway bar drop links etc. transformed the car apparently.

Teins are meant to be on the hard side and more suited to track use then some of the runs that we do on bumpy 'b' roads.

Give him a bell and ask his opinion.

What Dale does not know about Impreza's aint worth knowing about

For me on a new age I find 55 F 45 R too hard. Great on track but even with softest damping every pot-hole needs the buttocks to be clenched.

Hi Graham

I've got a lower brace that i've yet to fit along with;

Front and rear d/links, rear arb , an alk and a front top s/brace.

What other rubber bushes should i be looking to upgrade mate ?

Cheers

Frank

Dan:
In the front:

The ALK comes with stiff bushes from Whiteline.
The front pivots in the lower suspension arms need changing to Powerflex Purple grade.
There are a stack of rubber bushes in the rear end (16!), a lot of work to change them (and the diff carrier too) so be sure you want to go that far.
