Suspension choice for a STI TypeR V5
I am really needing to do something with the suspension on my scooby as one of the front struts is failing, and the rears are needing replaced too.
I bought Cusco coilovers a while back, but never got round to fit them, think they might be a bit on the hard side.
Just wanted to know if any one has any input on what works best. I was looking at possibly getting the KYB AGX's, or maybe just try to get the original struts that are on the STI V5, then what springs would work, Prodrive, STI, Eibach, Whiteline..............

I would say the exe-tcs having heard nothing but glowing reports about them.
More money than you may be considering, but from what I gather, well worth it.
Ask mark @ lateral as he has just had his fitted fro time attack.

PROFLEX ROAD UNITS
Hi m8
I have proflex road units on a V4 and they have just been serviced by Proflex UK. The impressive thing about them is that every part from seals to springs can be replaced or changed, if needed. They changed all the seals, a damaged strut, oil and spec gas for £250 for all 4 units. So if your looking for longterm use this may need to be considered.
The same units are used by rally schools and at least one indivuals who does official pace notes for the rallies.
Hope it helps

Cheers for the info, still not sure what to do, was gong to go with the coilover option but so many people have advised against doing this that I thought I better have a re-think.
Might have to take the plunge and fit the Cusco's
You will probably see them in the 'for sale' section in the next few weeks

Cuscos are way too hard except for track use, even then it's a bit hairy.
I'd go for AST suspension from Powerstation if your budget will stretch. It's amazing! I'm sure they'll do you a demo ride if you visit them in Cheltenham

I had cusco's fitted for all of 50 miles on my Uk turbo!!!! hated them, far to hard. great if it was a track but so bumpy on our roads it was unreal.
Switched to STI 6 suspension and have to say with Whiteline ARB, strut braces and solid drop links it's awesome.

Okay I have thought of a good plan
See what the Cuscos are like, cause if I don't fit them I'll never know.
Then if they are too hard, that's when I will go for one of the other options............
So I hope to hell that they are going to be okay, or I might as well put names into a hat and just pick something out
Way to many options, so many different types of coilovers, and the gas shocks/spring variations
Think I better plan ahead, got a feeling these Cuscos are going to do ma head in, or more likely ma back
So keep the suspension alternatives coming in guys, more than likely I'll need all the input I can get, cause if these coilovers aint right I will be needing to sort something out quick style, or it will be a few more visits to the physio for me, although she is kinda fit though
Maybe fitting the Cuscos is the way forward afterall

IMHO:
AST one way type (about £1000) with 40/30 springs for (UK turbo) comfort or 50/40 for an Sti ride () 60/50 for hard core.
Whiteline rear anti roll bar with 3 positions.
Anti lift kit and camber bolts all round.
Alignment by Curtis/Andy @ Powerstation set for road use (if that is your main use).
Some decent tyres would be a good idea too.
You WILL go home happy, and the day after, and the day after....
This is a PROVEN formula and it DOES work without fuss and compromise.
You MUST choose your spring rates properly so think about the main use of the car.
I seriously race mine on hillclimb track with 3000 road miles and run 60/50 springs.
On very rough B roads the same car with stock Sti suspension will match the current car.
With 50/40 you will be well ahead.
Getting the damping right is dead easy too so matching the springs.
Such a modified chassis will be a revelation as prob about 40 people in this country can tell you.
Such a package will also make the value of the car hold better as once driven you will impress any test pilot except those of us who have gone to the hard core level.
Hope this helps you.
Graham.

Hi there, I fitted a set of Carosser Coilovers to my 95 STI RA. This is the racing spec suspension from CUSCO. The handling of the car really was un-believable But the ride was far far too hard to the point of most people refusing to get in the car (Especially the ladies, who needed a sports bra before even thinking of getting in) On a motorway or dual carridge way I used to bounce in and out of my seat. Any way I had to take them off they were just to hard core !. I went for EIBACH Pro street S coilovers supplied by Scooby Clinic. They were not budget braking and are a good quality kit. The handling is very very good but not as good as the Carosser (Cusco). However I can now drive in COMFORT with the knoladge that the car is still going to handle very very well. In my opinon Cusco should be for the track only as it is too much of a compromise to the ride quality. I think a good set up is also vital. I had to get my car re-set up by RSE Motorsport as Scooby Clinic only set the car up to be with-in normal tolorrances. Andy at RSE motorsport is awasome at suspension set ups and sorted the car right out. I personaly think that the time and money your going to put into getting the CUSCO stuff on is a bit pointless as you are going to have amazing handling but a terrible ride. The EIBACH Coilover kit really is very good. Which ever option you go for the set up is essential. Hope this helps.

Hi AideRA, thanks for that, think you have convinced me not to bother with the Cuscos now.
Just with you saying that the ride is so hard your bumping out of the seat, I've been in a supra with rock hard suspension and it wasn't much fun, that's what I was worried about with the Cuscos, might just sell them and get something else.
Think I'll look at getting either the AST's or Eibach coilovers, they both sound pretty good.
Cheers
