Question Removing rear struts on a MY00

Can anyone give me a real basic guide to removing them? i.e what size spanners etc?

I removed the rear struts on an old XR2 and while the fronts were easy the rears were a bit of a b ugger as they sat on a prong/spike in addition to being bolted top and bottom. You could never get them off the prong let alone getting them back on again.

Do I need an allen key or just a couple of spanners (what size)? I know I have to remove the rear seats, I take it they are straightforward?

The breakdown on removing pads was fantastic and just the sort of thing I am after.

Cool

just done mine at the weekend
so
19mm take the wheels off
19mm socket and open ended spanner for the strut bolts
12mm socket and small extention for 2 strut tops
and 12mm rachet spanner makes live so much easier on the third strut top bolt near the seatbealt
brakes pipes need taking off the struts small clips that flick off with a screwdriver then you will need to undo the brake pipes
big bar to refit the strut into the hub mounts
and a trolly jack

Thanks Sampit.

Just a couple of points to clarify if you don't mind.

1.) How long does it take?
2.) When you say "undo" the brake pipes what do you mean?
3.) What the heck is the bar for?

Scoobynet (and its members) never fail to impress me.

How long does it take - if all comes out well then about an 40 mins but if its a bit stiff then about a hour.

Undo brake pipes - Get a clamp on the hose to stop the brake fluid going everywhere then unwind the bango bolt.

The bar is to force the bottom of the struts back into posistion on reassembly, they are very tight sometimes (see above "but if its a bit stiff....")

Why do you need to undo the brake pipes? I didn't when I did mine recently.

Don't know about anyone else, but doesn't the brake line go through the bracket in the strut. only way off is pass the pipe through or take a hacksaw to the strut bracket (10secs) ??

The biggest hassle will probably be the two bolts at the wheel hub. Those ******* were very tight the last time I undid one of them and I nearly gave myself a hernia

Only time I undid the rears was under a pit with a BIG ****-off bar. I wouldn't fancy doing it on a trolley jack. I start freeing those bolts first before you start ripping other bits off the car.

Ah the rear bolts.....the memories of hours and hours trying to undo them on a cold winters night. Hardest part of the job.

To remove brake lines I just took a hacksaw to the strut bracket. Easy.

Hellfrauds do a nice 1/2" drive 3' breaker bar for about £20, defo recommended for removing the 2 x 19mm bolts that secure the strut to the hub. You've got no chance of getting them undone without some 'length'

On my 05 the brake hoses are fed through a 'U' shaped bracket so once you loosen the hose/bracket nut it just slides out. Much easier than undoing the hoses. Then it is a good excuse to fit some nice braided hose..!
