Default Bilstein PSS9 Info

The muppets in the UK who sell the PSS9s don't know anything about them. I got this from Ralf Gallow of Bilstein -

The B16 PSS9 for Impreza is GM5-8603:
***************************************
1- what springs are supplied -
Front: inside diameter 60 mm / 70 N/mm rate (400lb/in) / free length 180mm / bound length 75mm
Rear: inside diameter 60 mm / 45 N/mm rate (250lb/in) / free length 200mm / bound length 75mm
***************************************
2- what is the available travel front and rear -
travel at front (bumper compressed) 113mm
travel at rear (bumper compressed) 133 mm
***************************************
3- what are the (high-speed) damper rates -
Front at 0,52 m/s open N 1470/1075 - closed N 2415/2215
(in 'Bilsteins' that would be 147/108 242/222)
***************************************
4- can you give me a force-velocity chart -
No! I will not.
***************************************
5- what characteristic(s) does the adjuster adjust -
Compression and rebound in parallel adjustment
***************************************
6- is the adjuster a needle bypass valve or a shim stack preload adjuster or something else -
It is a bypass adjustment/needle type you can adjust from the outside by turning a small aluminium wheel - mono-tube!!!
***************************************
7- can you tell me anything else about them
mono tube gas pressure upside-down struts at front and rear based on Bilstein motor sports materials; lowering at front 50mm (+/- 10mm) = 40 - 60 mm; lowering at rear 45mm (+/- 10mm) = 35 - 55 mm;
***************************************

Mate if you search in older posts there are some threads that mentioned various problems with rear units on PSS9 mainly with combination of springs/dampers.
Since then Bilstein have changed the PSS9 series for the Impreza but I am not sure how they perform.

DuncanG

www.powerstation.org.uk used to sell PSS9 dampers as part of a custom kit, which included Eibach Springs, and top and bottom spring carriers to suit, prior to moving to AST

Jim Theo is right to say that the earlier kits from Bilstein themselves had various problems, and I would not want the spring rate quoted above for road use in any case

I have the Powerstation custom PSS9 kit on a classic Impreza, and have been very pleased with it for road use, Millbrook, and MIRA

Jim your search must be working better than mine

Anyway I wasn't saying they're any good - simply giving info for anyone that might be thinking of them. For me the travel is too short and they're lowered too much.

just bumping this old thread to try and find out some info..

Does any one know where I could get hold of some front springs for Bilstein coil-overs as struggling to find them, if not am I correct in believing that Eibach springs can be used??

Thanks.

You should be able to just use Eibach 60mm ERS springs.
You can probably also use the 2.5" (63mm) ERS springs also.
