How do you know when dampers need replacing?
#1
I know the obvious answers like "when your car jumps like Skippy the Kangaroo", or "when the MOT guy says: Look at this leak"
But with normal driving, as the dampers slowly lose their effectiveness, how do you tell?
I remember the old trick of bouncing a corner of the car to see if it keeps going up & down for several bounces, but is there a better, or more scientific, way?
I don't expect mine are shot - far from it, the car's a MY98 saloon that's done 45000 miles. Fast road work only, never been on a track, just 'normal' (whatever that is) everyday driving with the occassional burst of 'pressonitus'.
Just curious what you experts/long-term owners thought?
Cheers,
Steve

Mine does not go round corners happily, it has a lot of body roll, tends to bounce over even the smallest of bumps and when you do press a corner of the car down, it is very squishy and bouncy.
I have an MY94 and seriously need some new dampers!!!
Michelle.

I have an objective solution for you:-
Some garages have equipment ramps which can measure the damper effectiveness while on the car, just drive on for a free 10 minute test with computer print-out and graph.
