not being technically minded i hope somebody out there can help. my93 wrx jap import has 16in team dynamic monza wheels fitted when i bought it. they look great but when i get some weight in the back and throw it into corners, the tyres scrub on the arches, especially on the drivers side. as you can imagine this is spoiling my showing off to my mates!!! i don't really want to change the alloys but don't know what else to do.

Cool

Hi there,

You have two options (both you wont like):

Change your wheels
Flare your arches.

Your wheels must be the wrong offset, and if they are they will be putting great stresses on the wheel bearings and screwing up the handling of the car.

The alloy wheel market has grown considerably for the impreza. There are many wheels to choose from. If you are on a budget, look at a second hand set of 16"'s off someone that has upgraded.

The absolute variance in offset would be +/-5. I would not suggest anything more than that.

How much weight ? or how lowered is it ? It only chatches on one side ?

Sorry about the bad news,

J.

Question

Firefox,

What is that +/-5 (mm?) rule based on? I've often wondered how much offset "error" you can safely get away with, and I'd be interested to hear any extra info you might have.

Cool

Dave,

I agree...The more info we have the better.

But when he/she commented they rub on the arches, I assumed they meant the actual arch lip, and not inside.

Based on that, it has to be the offset, because with the correct offset, the wheel should fit inside (even with ultra-low profiles).

The +/-5mm offset is just what I've been told over the years...some people say ten.... I dont believe that its stated in writing or been proven. The way I look at it is: find a wheel with the correct offset in the first place. *simple*

The greater the variance to the correct offset the more stress you will place on the car and the more you will alter the steering/handling.

Hence why the 22B with the wider wheel base isnt simply using standard suspense arms and large offset wheels, its using new longer whishbones/arms with the "standard" offset.

I suppose the best way is to phone around these wheel spacialists (such as Elite) and see what they say...

Cheers,
J.

That's how I look at it too, but it's not simple. ISTR that even the Prodrive-supplied 17s are a few mm different from standard. Wheh I first looked around last year, I couldn't find a satisfactory wheel that had *exactly* the correct offset. (Is it ET52? Can't remember for sure. Last year's Prodrive wheels were definitely ET55 tho')

Thumbs down

pumpers : How about taking one wheel out, looking on the inside of the rims and see what numbers you see - that should be the offset, then state the tyre size you have on your car and finally, if you know, how much has the car been lowered.

No one can help but speculate without the necessary info.

tara.
