how do i do the above? there's not a massive amount of noise and i don't want to put anything thick ontop of the mount as it sits high enough as it is, but figured someone must have tried something?

I assume your car is pre 2003?
I spoke to Leda regarding this problem, like a knocking noise coming from one or both of the struts. Apparently when you lower the rear the angle at which the strut sits puts a side load on the top mounts which (dont ask me why) causes the annoying sound. The noise dissapears with speed.
Apparently subaru changed the design of the top mount in 2001, it didnt help, but they changed it again in 2003 and the knocking noise ceased.
I tried sound proofing the top of the struts inside the car but had no joy.
The question is can a 2003 top mount be modified to fit the calssics? Has anyone tried and succeeded?

Pete, just repeating what i was told when i phoned them on monday with this problem.
It sounds like ive been fed a load of tosh from Leda then!
I must admit that i didnt think the sound was coming from the top, more from inside the suspension.

The front and rear units are exactly the same.
We have never heard of a knocking problem with front units.
It is true to say that the more the car is lowered, the more side load is asked of the mount, and this is beleived to be a contributing factor.
Also, one has to ask why Subaru have changed the design of the rear top mounts at least 3 times????? but not the fronts.
In our opinion, they seem to have solved the problem, as the 2003's don't seem to knock at all.
We too have spent years looking at this problem, and without taking anything from Pete's knowledge of the Subaru marque, we have specialised in suspension for 30 years.

Leda's don't come with pillowball top mounts at the moment. Depending on the model, we modify the existing top mount. It is something however that we are looking in to.

The general recommendation is not to go more then 20% of the original spring as the oe. damper will not control the spring. If too higher a rate spring is used it will over ride the caperbility of the damper.
One of our suppliers offers springs for oe units of 155lb and 145lb, but I imagine this is not nearly what you are after.
Much heavier rate springs can be used with after market coilovers, as the struts are built to suit.

cheers, but i didn't want to really go that route. i already have h&r springs fitted, but was maybe thinking more along the lines of a slightly hard spring and gradually uprating the roll bars and what have you. i have also fitted whiteline drop links.

ok, i have tein ha coilovers and they are noisy as hell, apologies if i am hijacking your thread but does anyone have any ideas if i can make them just that little bit quieter. ill never sell the car if or when i decide to!! i have lowered them 10cm, would raising the suspension make any difference?

Cactus Jim - I'm so pleased you posted as I have the TEIN set-up as well and mine have been bugging the hell out of me and until this thread I didn't realise it was such a common problem. Funny thing is that I only have it on one side at the rear though.
Now I know it is a common and acknowledged problem it probably won't bug me so much...(I'll just turn the stereo up!)

yup, only on the fronts though
and i'm gonna be sellin mine. too much noise, ride height isn't the same as the h&r's and i don't need the stifness for ruinning me 19's. gonna just replace me standard shocks and h&r springs and get the arb's and any other uprated bushes or anything.

Inteesting thread although going a bit off original post a bit!
Well, my story is...
4 years ago last Dec, I had Ledas fitted to my then wagon. No problems with noise.
Bought a P1 in June 2001 and had the suspension changed over by the dealer. Only noise was when cold and getting the car out of the garage etc. Other than that, no problems. I then noticed a couple of months ago that one of the rears had just started to weep(it has done 40k+) so booked in a couple of weeks ago for a refurb of all struts and any updates internally to be put into mine.
After picking the car up and noticing how much more supple and controlled the car felt, i noticed a loud noise from the rear at slow speed. Took the car back(I was fitted in at the last minute,Thanks) and the plastic sleeves now fitted were not cut short enough and were foiling the wheel/tyre.
At first all seemed o.k as before but now the noise is back from the left rear? it's like a knocking/tapping noise at slow speed and the smallest of bumps are the worst.
Beverly, any ideas? John was talking about rose jointed top mounts?
Pete, What does - "I spent years looking at this problem and it is nothing to do with the top mount" and you learnt? - doesn't help the poster does it?
Steve.

Gripping stuff.
I have the dreadded AVO coilovers on my Stiv3. NSR goes byooong every now and then, always at low speed. i'm sure it is the ciol spring shiftong on the location collar supplied with the AVO's. They use the Sti top mount.
The fronts now have the excellent MRT pillow ball mounts, silent as a lamb.
As to the spring rates, Whiteline advise caution, not too stiff and keep the rear spring rate to 80% of the front spring rate as a rule of thumb. My fronts are 300 lbs.
The struts are very close to their max damping at 8/10 turns, the rears are 6/10.
Many hill climbers run Leda units and are very very happy with the product and the service, looked great too at the Autosport show stand.
Anyway, hope this adds a bit to the 'chat'.
