Clonking Noise - MY03 Sti Prodrive Springs

I am getting a clonking noise as if the springs are not seated correctly. It is only affecting the rear springs on uneven roads.
Dealer says this is normal and should settle down at circa 1500 miles.
Is this normal or what?
Cheers

No, it's not normal. If the spring has been correctly positioned in the bottom seat (the top seat can only go on in one position to suit the arrangement of the three studs which secure the top of the strut to the body) there should be no noise of the type you describe. Incorrect seating of the spring in the bottom seat will possibly cause noise. Check that the top three nuts on the studs are tight (do not OVERTIGHTEN these, they have been known to shear!)this will necessitate removal of the rear seats unfortunatly and also check the tightness of the two large nuts/bolts that secure the strut to the hub assembly, these should be REALLY tight!

Thanks John. They were actually fitted by Prodrive themselves and not the dealer so I will get them checked if it persists.

Fitted by Prodrive and they clonk! Fitted mine myself and they don't clonk! - Either it's embarrasing for Prodrive or I've got it wrong and they should!

PS You haven't got the noisy rear suspension syndrome that is affecting some STi7/8 owners have you?

I need to investigate further as someone has suggested it could be the boot latch due to the weight of the spoiler - but I am not convinced

I've actually posted on a previous thread about tightening the boot latch. I did it myself and found a reduction in bump related noise! If you can shut the boot by just pushing down quite hard (as opposed to slamming) then it's probably too slack and may "bounce" on occasions. Open up the armrest "ski" hole to allow any sounds to come through.
