Tracking rod replacement - ££ ??

Drivers side front tracking is out.
The nut is playing hard to get (Seized) and the lads at the garage say they don't want to heat it cos there is rubber / grease nearby.
(Surely some form of protective cover would help ??)
Anyhow - They have recommended replacing the track rod.
I'd be interested if anyone has had this done recently and could give me an idea of how much this work might cost.
I watched the guy try to turn the nut and he did seem to be struggling a bit and I know only too well how easy it can be to round them off. They didn't think much of my idea to use a wire brush to clear som of the crap out of the thread.
Any advise ?
Am I being nudged into spending when in reality I needn't ??

I think it sounds expensive, and if this is a local exhaust & type place I would not let them at it!
Track rod replacement ( not sure on Scoobies ) usually means rack off - from chassis and both wheel ends, remove end cap of rack / track rod retainer, remove and replace track rod with new rod end, rebuld and refit to car, then alignment.
Expensive I guess in labour if not in parts!
Get a leverage tool on the spanner on the track rod/rod end lock nut, but first wire brush the threads and soak in WD40/duck oil, then go back and let them try it again!

Sorry to bump in on this thread, but I have a similar problem on mine. Knocked against a kerb and the tracking rod looks like it needs adjusting. The 2 Subaru garages near me are full booked until the end of Jan 04. I've had a look at it and it doesn't seem bent, just adjusting back in to straighten the wheel from the angle it currently is. I could have a guess at what distance to pull it back in, but would rather it was done properly. Any idea how much this would cost and anywhere that would be able to do this around the Beds,Bucks area?
