The one where the lower A-arm joins the steering knuckle.......there is a pinch bolt at the bottom of the suspension strutt. When undone does the steering knuckle come loose or do you need a ball joint seperator on it?

Cheers!

You need the separator.

Dowser,

Will a normal breaker fit? There seems to be limited clearance above the balljoint to get the flat of the breaker in there (if you see what I mean!!!!)

Sorry, don't know - I'm talking about the steering rack connection though;

When I was changing wheel bearings/hubs this ball joint needed to come off. I undid the nut, it dodn't come off, I asked a real mechanic to have a look and he gave me a proper tool

But re-reading your post you're maybe talking about the hub's connection to the lower arm? If so, we bodged it using a tyre bar for leverage...and occasional use of a big hammer.....

you dont need a splitter.. you need a big hammer..

Tap the lower arm whilst the nut is removed.. tap it from the side next to the nut if this makes sense..

then use a bar to lever between the hub and arm.. and bang it splits..

I actually undid the pinch bolt at the bottom of the strut. Long bar, big hammer, balljoint released from hub...!!!!!

Cool

Same for me as JamesS. Use a good dose of WD40, ease the jiont with the bolt removed and both sides simply came apart, sign that Japan does not salt their roads in winter. my car has the alloy lower arms though.
Graham.
