SHOCK ABSORBER GONE????

My 96 prodrive has developed a irritating low speed squeak from the rear nearside. At first i thought it was the rear parcel shelf but on bouncing the back end up and down it sounds like the shock\spring assembly.
Does this mean the shock is dead???
