Hi

I have taken the front wishbones off my car but cannot get the bushes out!! I have had the alloy mounts in the oven and tried that way but they are still very difficult to budge. Anyone had the same problems/ got any ideas. I am just about to take them to my local dealer.

Cheers

Lightbulb

Try chain drilling them out with a small ish drill.
Drill as much of the bush rubber out as you can. Then you should of weakened them enough for them to then get hit out.

eddie,

clamp the a-frame in a workshop vice and drill round the rubber loads of times until you can sqeeze the middle out with a socket in the vice. then get a file and carefully file through the remaining rubber and into the steel insert so you have a groove all the way down. you need to file the groove so you dont go into the ally but just leave about 0.5mm left on the steel. then get a screwdriver and a hammer and bend the steel back either side of the groove.

Kippax is dead right, I fitted all Powerflex in the whole car over the winter (bu88er of a job)and this method work perfectly. Be happy you are only doing the wishbones...

Ok I have now fitted the new powerflex bushes to the front wishbones.

Question: Do the original rubber spacers (the cog shaped ones) go back with the powerflex bushes or do you take them out??

The steering now feels much meatier and the turn in is improved, also braking stability is better. However, I find that the front now crashes and bangs a lot more over bad roads. Cant have it all ways I suppose!!

911, me too. 15hrs hard graft.

eddie, launch the old ones that look like cogs and try and keep the aluminium extrusion that houses the rear a-frame bush in the same orientation as it came off. i know it looks symetrical but check the edge of the extrusion is in the same place both sides i.e. should be flush with the mounting upright laterally.

Cool

Eddiebeef/Klippax
eddie you did well to do it all in 15 hours1 You must work quicker than me.
Klippax, what is all the bang and crash? My car is SILENT over nearly every surface. Get back under that front end and check everything again, should be as tight as a drum!

Im not saying that the suspension is now noisy but a lot more vibrations felt over rough surfaces. Its bound to be the case if the bush material becomes harder, why do you think subaru perform NVH testing and dont fit these bushes as standard??

To get them off i've done it this way before...

Hacksaw most of the bush off...

Blowtorch and burn and scrape the rest off..

The run a bead of weld around the sleeve with the mig welder.. then put a chisel against the weld and chisel the sleeve off.
