Hi guys

for a standard sti version 3 1997- is there much to tinker with as standard in the alignment set up and therefore worth going to a motor sport specialists (fast road set up?) or is it pretty standard stuff that kwick fit can do using the hunter machine?

Reason being kwick fit and the likes are near by where as the specialist are a bit of travel

Someone with a hunter machine who will get it right should be OK, but they should be someone who is going to actually try and get the specs you want! I've seen far too many lazy people at some of these places.

In your case, I'd grab a camber bolt or two and install on the rear as this will help you equal them up. Front should have enough adjustment to get it OK unless you want a particularly aggressive setup.

Camber and toe will be what you are adjusting - getting as much castor as you can get too, as equal as possible. Plenty of threads on ideal setups on the forum. But depends what you want of course.

 

hunter set up will be fine as long as the operator knows what he,s doing and actually tries to set it up properly. you tend to find guys in quick fit deal day in and day out with ordinary punters just wanting their wheels pointing straight and not the enthuisiast driver wanting a decent set up. i went to a small independant garage local to me who has the hunter system but i know the guy from school days and he is good at setting cars up. that being said they will all give you a printout showing what they have done etc and they have access to all the oem and prodrive settings online so should get it pretty spot on. made a hell of a difference to mine and it feels so planted and grips even in the wet now.

 

As above the machine is only as good as the man using it.

With my steering wheel sitting slightly off center when driving, does that sound like classic tracking requiring to be done?

Yes it will need that done. Make sure they get it centred. Again, I have seen many people who are lazy and don't get things spot on. Test drive it and don't be afraid to go back if it is wrong.

Specs can change depending on how you want them. I like to go something like -1.5 degrees camber (negative) ((and if they are using minutes thats 1 degree 30 minutes...)) in the front, -1.2 in the rear. You can go zero toe all around or (as many like it set up and I have used) a bit of toe in all around with a slight edge of total toe in the rear. Read bonesetter's threads.
