I've had aftermarket dump valves fitted on my impreza and they never drove like you mentioned, never caused me any problems. Just makes me wonder if there is a problem with the spring and boost leak.
Sorry to post this in your for sale thread, but it is always best to check these things before someone else buys it and gets trouble.

I'm no expert i'm afraid, but it made the correct noise on/off boost, you could be right! When i was researching i found quite a few other threads relating to rough running and dump valves which is why i ripped it out!

They are generically very simple items dump valves. I also believe you can buy new springs for them if that turns out to be the problem. Or simply as you say, your engine may not have liked it. Some do, some don't depending on the map. In my experience regardless of the map I've never had a problem.
