Default Subaru Impreza WRX TYPE RA (1996)

Hi,

I'm selling my 1996 JDM Subaru Impreza WRX Type RA

It's in excellent condition, probably one of the best you will find in this price range.

All the usual Type RA features:
276hp EJ20K engine.
Lightweight bonnet and glass, minimal sound deadening. Manual windows/mirrors, unpainted door handles/mirrors, no skirts/spats/splitters.
Has fog covers instead of lights.
Intercooler water spray.
Short ratio / close ratio gearbox.
Original alloys fitted with 4 nearly new Goodyear Eagle F1.

The car is standard apart from:
Fujistubo CAT back exhaust which is only slightly louder than stock but sounds amazing.
HKS foam panel filter.
HKS boost gauge.
CAT 1 Alarm/Imob with insurance certificate.
Retrofit BiXenon HID projectors (comes with a spare set of normal lights).

First registered in Japan 01/10/1996
First registered in the UK 12/03/2008
90,290miles which will increase slightly as I'm still using it

Everything is as it should be, there is no rust anywhere AT ALL! It has never had any bodywork which as you know is rare for an Impreza... Always run on V-Power, warmed up / cooled down, gets the best oil (Millers), the previous owner had just done the cambelt. I normally get 24-26mpg as its my daily car. The understated looks and quiet exhaust it's a perfectly useable (and quite practical) car.

I'm 30 and pay 451 fully comp. I looked at over 30 Impreza's before I found this one, you will not be disappointed! The Type RA is IMHO the most pure Impreza experience, this car is in amazing condition, nice and tight, well balanced, and perfectly maintained. It's an awesome machine, will make someone very happy! Tax and MOT March 2013

£2,600

For anyone not in the know the WRX TYPE RA was built to comply with the Group N / Group A rules and this will be lighter than an equivalent STI RA.

Info on different specs (this is MY97 model) http://wrxtypera.webs.com/imprezaspecs.htm

Hi,

Yes they were import only and this one came over in 2008 with one previous UK owner to me.

It has about 89k miles on it (will double check tomorrow as I'm still using it and its still in KM)

Looks like a nice car
You have a few mistakes in the advert though which will be picked up by those in the know
Your engine isnt a closed deck block unless someone has repalced it, it will be open deck being a phase 1.5 unit and a wrx engine, (and 276bhp not 280bhp, most get PS and BHP mixed up, its 280ps/276bhp and dont believe those sites that say they push 300bhp, they dont).
There are not that many lightweight parts on the car believe it or not, the magnet doesnt lie your glass will be thinner and the bonnet will be alloy, thats about it, doors are the same as any other impreza, if anything with the steel parts the STI doesnt have but the wrx does, it isnt much lighter
its also not the lightest model they did, believe it or not, the early cars were lighter and the UK ones are pretty light too.
GLWS, try www.ladsoc.co.uk a good bunch over there, and put more about the service history, cambelt and oil changes are good but what about diff/gearbox oil changes (every 2 years) and coolant/brake/clutch fluid changes.

Hi Tony - Cheers (like I said correct me if I'm wrong! ) Just edited the first post

I've just done some research on the VIN plate which confirms it's a MY97 with the EJ20K DW6HD so is indeed open deck 276hp motor. I just saw cross hatches and thought it was CDB...

I'll have a look over at ladsoc (didnt know about them!) so thanks again.

As for additional service information, the previous owner did the gearbox and diff oil as soon as he got it and did a coolant flush shortly after when he replaced the radiator. I did it all three again as well as the clutch / brake fluid earlier this year...

Also comes with a snazzy Pioneer double DIN headunit with ipod / USB inputs and fully integrated bluetooth (wired mic in the roof sound through the speakers etc) with full phonebook sync and all that jazz. Can be seen in the interior shot above.

When exactly was the cambelt changed? And when you say the previous owner did it, do you mean the paid to get it done at a garage or they did it themselves? Do it have any receipts to back up the cambelt change?

Also if it's still in klms, does it still have the 112mph speed limiter in place?

Also just to clear up, this is a WRX but with STi power from the factory right? Does that mean the engine is effectively at its limit from the factory? Just wasn't aware a WRX type RA existed.

The cam belt was done as soon as he got it mid '08, and it's done 20k miles since. He had pictures to back it up on the for sale ad and the original belt (which I might still have it somewhere). Being an import it came over with no paperwork and he planned on keeping it long term so changed it to be safe. He did it himself just as i would, it's not hard and if it's your second car or access to others you can take your time.

Yes the limiter is still in place although with the RA gear box you won't be going much faster than that with it removed (as it'll redline in 5th at around 130mph).

Get over to type-ra.co.uk that will tell you everything you need to know about the model. No the engine is not 'at it's limit' from the factory but there are some differences between this and the later STI RA models, non forged pistons I believe and that's about it.... I'm sure the classified ad police will be along soon to clarify if thts not the case though

This is my sensible daily car, the others are the ones I play with hence I never really looked into tuning potential of the Impreza. I always keep my daily as close to stock as possible..

Cheers

Thanks very much for the reply mate, appreciate it. I will have a look at the RA forum a bit later if I get a chance, just moved house in the last two days.

I forgot about the gearbox being short ratio and topping out, I obviously had the same box in my old STi type r.

Could you pm me your address (or postcode at least) so I can look up how far away you are from me please?

Oh, and I'm assuming this doesn't have the DCCD like the type r's have? (that's on the STi type RA's as well isn't it?) so many models I can't keep up!
