Default DIY Mudflaps?

I've been looking for a set of mudflaps for my Forester and I'm amazed at the cost of what must be 4 square foot of PVC and a couple of brackets.

I wonder if anyone has successfully rustled up a decent looking DIY set and if so are there any pitfalls to watch for?

i have home made ones , got some stuff that the bin lorries use for the huge flap on the back. I was working in my councils yard and it was on a massive roll as they replace them regularly. I really could just do with brackets as the curl a bit.

I made my old ones, sheet of 3.5mm PVC and traced my mates £100 ones lol. Used aluminium strips for the brackets...

Excuse the stickers, I was younger and unwise lol
