Default Stripping 2nd hand part and re-painting, cheaper than buying new part?

Hi,

I need a rear bumper on my STI. Subaru have quoted £255 for an unpainted bumper, they have yet to get back to me with the cost of painting it however.

If I went 3rd party, does anyone how long would can expect it to take a specialist to strip the old paint off, and re-paint in the correct colour?

That would give me a rough ball park on cost,

Thanks,

m

They don't strip the old paint off, bud, they clean it, prep it with something like ScotchBrite, which roughens the surface, then spray over it. No worries, I have a red spoiler sprayed over DBM.

Get a few local quotes, preferably from trusted paintshops. I reckon you'll be looking at around £100 if you provide them with a decent clean bumper to start with.

When I had my splitter resprayed, it had a few little holes and chips. I spent half a day filling them with Miliput, an epoxy resin, sanding down with wet-or-dry and then Scotchbrited the whole lot. I took it in when they were doing some other work and they did it for £25 extra. Ditto my new folding mirrors: I prepped them, they sprayed them for £25 the pair.

Thanks alcazar - that's the sort of thing I needed to know. Subaru have quoted me over £550 for a replacement bumper, prepared and painted.

So I'll get one 2nd hand then and get the coachworks company to sort it out

Cheers,

m

You'll save a packet.
If buying a second hand bumper though, DO be aware EXACTLY what year is being sold. Better still, find one on e-bay, and go and pay cash, have a look before you part with any money, make sure what they have is the same as what you had. Also make sure to get the support bar with it, yours is likely bent now, so ask if the one on the replacement is OK.

Out of interest, I bought one in red 559 for £30 delivered. Good nick, could go straight on, but has a few scuffs.

Thanks a lot. Looks like I'm getting one from a WR1 which is the same as my Type UK. You're right, the support bar is bent I think, so I'll ask for that too (wouldn't have thought about it),

This is setting me back £100 plus delivery, one of the Scooby breakers on Ebay - too far to travel
