Default Hydraulic bonnet struts

If you have these fitted how do you close the bonnet? By lowering it down does it drop by itself from 40cm or so or do you have to rest it on the hook and press on it (not recommended as the bonnet is aluminium in hawkeyes).
Also do you need to drill holes to fit the struts?
Thanks
