Default How do i prime something?

Hi there,

I am getting a new spoiler and sideskirts soon and my garage said i could save alot of labour charges if the ones i get are already primed and ready to paint, trouble is the ones im getting arent.

Is it hard to prime them? Ive seen primer spray in halfords, is it basically spraying the primer on, like and undercoat for the paint?

Any tips would be fantastic.

Hey there mate....
basically its all about sanding and spraying!
I am currently in the same situation... have a facelift bumper I need spraying.

Sand off as much of the original paint as you can- I am not sure if you can use something like Nitromors on fibreglass/plastic... it will certainly speed things up! Check before though mate you ve been warned

Once you have removed as much paint as possible and smoothed it all down its time for the spray.
Obviously using a spray gun/compressor combo is ideal, but cans work ok if you are capable.

Shake vigorously for 5 minutes - up and down, an also swirl the metal ball around the bottom of the can.

Spray from a distance of around 12"... keep your arm moving across the object... pressing the spray button before you pass over it... carrying on (not stopping) and releasing the button once you have passed!

Wait for it to dry.

Another thin coat

Sand it down with fine wet and dry

another coat

Finer wet and dry.

Remember always best to have multiple fine coats rather than one thick coat!

Don't use paint stripper on plastic or fibre glass, I learned the hard way on my motorbike fairing, it melts the plastic.

Personally, if you are unsure of what you are doing pay the extra and get the bodyshop to do it. If your primer or prep is poor you could end up with the paint flaking off or cracking, or worse the bodyshop charging you more to undo your work and redo it from scratch.

Advice from a painter,
If you don't really know what your doing its worth paying the extra. If all the paint peels off they can just turn round to you and say its your fault for not priming them correctly. If they are plastic they are easy to prep but poor fibreglass moulds are a nightmare
