sti 5 spoiler fitting concern
Hi Folks
I have a new sti5 spoiler ( copy purchased by a reputable supplier known on here ) to fit on my MY00 but am concerned about fitting due to the lower level of the spoiler being warped in relation to the boot lid. If you look at the back of the car, there is a gap of about an inch in the middle of the spoiler ( under the brake light ) to the bonnet where the spoiler bows up.... my concern is that as this flexes ( not easily either ) to meet the boot lid, the paint will crack in certain areas of the spoiler. I did discuss it with the supplier and he advised that this will be fine and the there is a lot of give in fibreglass and the paint is flexible ...but im still a bit concerned. As the fibre glass doesnt flex that easily down to the boot lid Im convinced this will have to have many of the holes drilled as opposed to using an adhesive in the middle ( actually I cant see how an adhesive could hold mine down due to the size of the gap and resistance in the fibreglass ).. ..this seems to be at odds with what other people do of just using outside 4 holes and some puriflex .
Can anyone advise if they have encountered the same situation with a copy sti5 spoiler and if the outcome was ok. I guess i dont want to get into a situation where i have bootlid like a tea strainer and a knackered spoiler i cant fit well.
Cheers
Richard

A 1.25 inch gap is a bit on the large side.
Did you purchase the spoiler painted? Or did you buy it in primer?
Either way, did you test fit it before painting? Or not have chance?
I think a further coversation with the supplier may be in order. If it were me, with that sort of gap, I'd reject it, sorry.

It came painted already as this was one of my concerns that the paint would crack. Might take a photo of this and send it back to him to just reconfirm his views....I was expecting it to fit flush onto the boot immediately without any bolts

i got a cheapy V6 spoiler off ebay a little while back and the fit on that was ******* awful. seems i'm not alone in getting spoilers with heavily shaped lower sections though (did someone actually mould this off an impreza bootlid FFS or just guess a shape and go with it???)
anyways, i got mine flat to the bootlid by wedging a section of wood between the top and bottom sections (heavily wrapped in cloth) cut it to a snug fit then pushed wooden wedges top and bottom to push the bottom down (okay it bowed the top section aswell but that's gone back down flat)
sounds very drastic and a bit heavy handed (was at the point of no return) but it's done the trick. bolted on the outside and sikaflex will easily hold the middle. trust me this **** will never let go
the fibreglass will bend quite happily as should the paint, the only battle damage i was left with is a slight dip in the bottom section near the brake light where the wood block pushed into it, so if you do go for my last resort method (ie. desperate!) put a flat pice of plywood of similar to the bottom to sit the block on.
didn't have any probs with bending of the bootlid, but then again i'm on my 4th spoiler and i've got a bootlid that looks like swiss cheese

Richard W, i would defo send it back , There should be NO gap's between spoiler an boot anywhere near 1.25" not even the .25 ,don't think the spoiler will "GIVE" 1.25" if where you bought it from does, he's p1ssed
This is why when you're buying a spoiler is DON'T get it painted BEFORE you've tried it on first , don't care who surplied it,
this is a "get out" clause some retailer's use NOT to take returned spoiler's because if you DON'T try them on first to see what the fit's like BEFORE painting
and you have a **** fit AFTER painting,it's TOO LATE, they WON'T take them back,
where did you buy ?

take the pics and send them to him
revolutions spoilers are like yours, theres a H U G E gap under the centre, my mate was told to put big screws through which would pull the spoiler to the bootlid................. it didn't work!
as above, if something is painted they wouldn't let you send it back,

We regret that we cannot offer refunds or returns for spoilers once they have been primed or painted.

RichardW, Q ,you got the spoiler supplied painted so YOU couldn't check what the fit was like, if you had recieved this unpainted and found this to be a v,bad fit what would have done ???
A, SEND it back
He's supplied this painted so it should have been checked for fit before painting, and if it was this bad He shouldn't have sent it to you but BACK to who made it,
Why should S/micky be discrete, if a "well known scooby specialist" is passing on CRAPPY spoiler's,we should be told,

A good copy wil be exactly what it says, VIRTUALY identical. This sounds absolute rubbish, so dont accept the part. And the base should be quite stiff, I wouldnt expect it to flex that much without it going CRACK!

Had a chat with the supplier again and also did another fitting check..when lining the holes up correctly the gap from the outside edge of the spoiler to the bootlid is just half inch in the middle of the spoiler - looks worse if you look at the gap underneath spoiler where it is about 3/4 inch.
Just taken some photos as requested by supplier so we can figure this out. Will keep you posted.
Cheers for your comments folks.

Sneaky suggestion
I recently purchased a cheapy STI spoiler from ebay...............fitting was atrocious, spoke with my friendly 'Littleknocks person' and he suggested the following.
Remove the top half of the spoiler. Then fit bottom half...........
Guess what?
Fits like a glove.
I then drilled two holes 'middle for diddle' through the boot lid and into the spoiler, popped a couple of heave duty hollow wall fixings in and bolted the whole thing down. Then (with the aid of a friend) I refitted the top half.
It now look like this:

Just an update on this... I have been assured that the spoiler will fit correctly without any issues and i have been offered either a full refund now or even in the event i have issues with fitting. To be fair to David ( who has been excellent with regard to customer service ) my initial message was a bit misleading as the gap when attached to the bootlid was not as large as initially mentioned ( only half inch @ the edges in the middle, 1.25 inches when on a flat surface other than bootlid...had a bad week with no sleep so got me figures all twisted up ) Thanks all for your comments and help... i will post back ob monday hopefully with good news.

Sorry, I don't get time to look on Scoobynet as much as I used to, but just to clear up a few issues here regarding Richards spoiler.
Firstly when he told me there was a 1.25" gap in the middle of the spoiler, I was a bit surprised, as that should have been noticed before it was painted.
But this morning, Richard sent an e-mail which cleared this up. Here's his quote.
"Off the car, if you rest the spoiler on the floor, the gap on the front edge to the surface its standing on is just over 1.25 inch"
Unfortunately all Impreza's have curved bootlids, and if you do own one that's as flat as the floor - well you will have a problem.
Unlike "other" companies, we will always accept returns whether painted or not. We have never and will never use the old excuse of "but it's been painted" for not accepting returns. I wouldn't buy from such companies either.
Richard already knows he can send it back at any time if he's not 100% satisfied.
We probably supply more spoilers and body styling parts than anyone else in the UK, and are the only ones to offer Free painting.
Our reputation is second to none, and we fully intend to keep it like that. And I really don't care if that upsets some of the other styling suppliers.

As promised, just wanted to confirm that the spoiler fits absolutely fine after my initial query with Dave... subsequently well chuffed with the results . Once i had made a template for drilling the selected holes it only took 30 mins to fit and bolt down.
Thanks Dave for helping me out here.

Just to confirm, i to purchased an sti5 spoiler from same source, and mine was also some 15mm higher in the centre from bootlid.David assured me it would pull down tight without cracking paint. He was dead right ,the spoiler was on the car for 18 month's before i traded it in and the spoiler looked as good as the day i fitted it.
