blending in paint work?

I have a few repairs to make to my bumpers and a couple of scratches on the wheel archs. What is the best method for blending in the new paint without getting a solid line against the edge of the masking tape?

use a laquer with a blending clear.
paint the area around the repair.
laquer round the repair on first coat.
same again but a bit further out. another 4" or so.
mix the laquer 50 50 with the blending clear and "paint" the edge of the laquer to get it to fade out.
blend the new edge with just the blending clear.
i hope this makes sense

Thanks for that but I am hoping to do this with spray cans. I have had a can done at halford so I have the right colour, it's just wether I can get away without the blending clear you mention? The repair are in areas that visable really it's just where I have removed the splash guards and a couple of other bumper marks.

you could try painting it with spray cans, then when its dry (2 days min) then flat the edge of the paint with 2000grade wet and dry,
then compond it with g3 to bring back the shine and get the 2000 scratch marks out

You can try my method that I have used on metalic blue (deep mica blue).
Also using halfords paint.

Ok, after repairing the area in question and getting it primed, flat the entire panel with 800 grit paper, just to key the surface.

Now paint the area you have repaired and primed. Fan out the paint to around 4 inches so that at the edge of the repair you are only lighty dusting the paint onto the panel. Make sense?
Make sure you have covered the area with the colour. Take it into natural daylight to check for light areas showing primer through. A hand light may help if its crappy weather.

Then wait for around 20 mins, temp of room will decide your drying time. Do not flat the surface after your last coat and dont worry about small bits of dust etc.


Laquer the entire panel, but be very careful as the laquer will run easily. Do you first coat so that you get no shine at all. The second coat a little heavier, and the third so you get a sheen.

Dont worry about the shine at this stage. Let it dry for a couple of days then flat the surface with 1200 grit and T-Cut to a shine.
This took me about 20 mins to do a bumper and it comes up like glass.

PS I am no expert, but my methods here have made a good job of mine.

Thanks for that, that sounds good, similar the the old cellulose way of spraying.
