STi 5 rear spoiler - Fitting ?
#1
OK - Just got my new replica STi 5 rear spoiler back from the body shop and its ready to go on the boot. Taken the old one off and lined up the new one. Old spoiler had 4 fixing holes. This ones got 12 !!
Whats the best way of locating the holes to drill onto the boot.
How many holes have I got to drill ?
Do I have to use all holes ?
What material do you use for bonding to the boot ?
AAAAAAaaggghhhhhhhh!!!!
Dont want to give to bodyshop to do, as I want to do it myself and save some pennies !!

You don't have to use all the holes, but the more you use, the more solid it will be, (but see later).
If you want to drill more holes, the best bet is to make a paper template of the bottom of the spoiler, locate the holes on it, and fasten it to the spoiler with, say, masking tape.
On the bottom of the template, the bit that will touch the car when it's in place, place some double sided sticky tape.
Now, with a helper, carefully line up where the spoiler will sit, and seat it onto the car. Remove the masking tape, and lift the spoiler off the car, leaving the template stuck down.
Mark hole positions with a pen suitable for writing on CD's etc.
BEFORE DRILLING:
1. ensure that any hole you make will be accesssible from below for a screw/nut etc. It's pointless making a hole if you can't get at it.
2. place a small piece of tape where the hole is to be drilled, to avoid drill bit wandeer!!!
Now put a line of Cicaflex (sp?), or Puriflex, available from car paint specialists, around the base of the spoiler, and a ring of it round every hole you are going to use.
Put spoiler in place, get someone to hold it, and get two bolts/screws in to hold it, fairly quickly.
Now do up the rest.
Remove excess Puriflex with white spirit, and LOADS of paper towel. Work quickly, but don't panic, the stuff DOES come off:
My local sprayshop tell me that once the Puriflex goes "off", you can remove the bolts if you want!!
I haven't!!!!
PS: mine is held on with 6 bolts, and the sealant, and it's a V6
Total time: approx 1 hour.
