Hi

Just wondering if someone could shed any light on to what spoilers were supplied as standard on UK MY98 Turbos?

What I'm getting at is that I have a MY98 with a small, low level, spoiler and most of the MY98s that I see around have the standard larger spolier. Was the small spoiler an option?

Also from an insurance point if view is there anyway to know what size spoiler the car was originally supplied with? i.e. do I need to tell my insurance company if I change the spoiler to a standard size one?

I hope this makes sense and thanks in advance!

Hi Marcel,

I've got a MY98 too - R plate. The 98s came with the low level spoiler as standard.

I guess what you're seeing are the large number of cars that have upgraded to the spoiler that was standard from MY99 on. They came with the STi4 spoiler that's sort of halfway between the MY98 and a full blown WR sport / 22B type.

Still not sure whether to go for a bigger one on mine as funds allow or spend it on more useful stuff like brakes/engine/suspension mods!

Edited to add - the low level one on your car is standard, if you fit another you should tell your insurers as they'll use any excuse to avoid paying out if there's a claim!

Cheers,
Steve

But since MY98 cars on R and S reg both have high and low level spoilers, there is NO way your insurance company will know which one your car came with.

It would be different if you were fitting, say a 22B or P1 spolier, but an STI 4 is standard on your car, depending on when built. (Some early cars registered late will have small spolier and vice versa).

Go ahead fit one!!!! The small ones look crap anyway.

Cheers!

Well, I'm still confused...

Still the long and short of this is that I dn't need to have any concerns if I change to an STI4 spoiler and thats what I was hoping!

Cheers guys

I used to have an MY98 to heres what I know

All MY97/98 turbos came with the small spoilers(I think that older models(pre 97?) didn't even have the brake light)

You can get some S reg cars that are MY99 and these have the mid level spoiler(as found on T,V,W,X reg UK Turbos).

Just to throw a spanner in the works, if you bought a turbo back in 1997/1998(with the small spoiler) and you wanted the bigger prodrive optional spoiler you paid approx £750 for a spoiler called a Prodrive WR spoiler. This spoiler looks exactly the same as a MY99/00 spoiler(ie mid level). The high level Prodrive WR spoiler onlt became the high model(ala RB5 WR) in 99/00.

So for insurance purposes, all imprezas upto and including MY98 models (ie almost all cars upto and including S reg) should have the small spoiler as standard. Only very few S reg cars(MY99) will have the bigger(mid level) spoiler. You can also tell the MY98 and MY99 apart because the MY99 should have a different front bumper and it will have 4 pot brakes(MY98 have 2 pot)

All of the above only apply to UK turbo models

If anyones wondering how I know this its because I bought an S reg MY98 in Aug 1998 and bought the optional Prodrive WR spoiler(mid level - it was the biggest at the time). Then when the MY99 came out 6 months later they brought out the newer Prodrive WR spoiler and put the mid level spoiler as standard on turbos (I was gutted). 3 years later I bought the bigger Prodrive WR spoiler (RB5 WR type).
