4th Place, anyone?
Who's going to grab that 4th place slot in the Premier League?
As it stands:
Position Team Played GD PTS
4 Tottenham 34 28 64
5 Man City 34 27 62
6 Aston Villa 35 15 61
7 Liverpool 35 24 59
Trouble is the last time a team from outside the Big 4 (Everton) qualified for the CL (2005-2006 season), they fell at the first hurdle with 2 defeats in the qualifying round, so never even made it to the lucrative Group section, let alone the later knock-out stages. Consequently it was all a bit of a damp squib as Everton were out of Europe before it had even started. Maybe they would have been better off in the UEFA Cup?
I can't see inexperienced Spurs or Villa doing any better than that at Champions League level either and Liverpool are now so far off Rafa's "guaranteed" 4th place, that they are highly unlikely to make it. So I guess that just leaves Man City's billions to uphold our honour in CL qualifying next season. If City can buy Messi, Ronaldo, Kaka, Rooney etc. during the summer, they could be in with a shout of progressing beyond the Qualifying stage.
If Man City don't make it to 4th this year, poor old Gareth Barry's dream of playing CL football (his cited reason for wishing to leave Villa: nothing to do with the money of course ) will have to be put on hold for another year, by which time he will be over the hill at 30-odd.
