Aah yes Shearer the returning Messiah. Hang on a minute, I thought that was Keegan? Or was it Bobby Robson? Perhaps Mike Ashley should ditch his thankless quest for spiritual salvation and start looking for a decent football manager? Otherwise I can see them starting next season down in the Championship with the Angel of the North sat in the dug-out flapping his wings in frustration!

with being such a big club i wouldnt have predicted they would be where they are and you cant blame shearer i dont think any manager can save them now if they do escape i think shearer will stay but if not he has nothing to lose.

When are people going to stop calling them a big club?
The commentators on the TH v NU game introduced the match by saying both clubs have a rich history! Newcastle have won nothing in my memory. i am 38.
Can anyone tell me how NU qualify to be a big club? as i do not know how they can be.

They are a big club in terms of supporters/regular large attendances/financial stability and turnover and being quite high up on the European clubs rich list. This of course does not count for anything in terms of performance and lack of trophies and whether they should be in any sort of proposed super league.

Call it what you like, but theyre big.... You cant argue that fact. Its like saying a giant easter egg isnt big because it tastes horrible (presuming you didnt like chocolate)

Well according to Rafa, Everton aren't a big club but have won a lot more than most clubs in the premiership.

Come on they won the Inter Toto 2 or 3 years ago, got a trophy and everything, I believe they stopped short of the Open topped bus round the city

That is what makes a club big though, it's fan base and the revenue that follows. Just because they haven't won anything doesn't make them a small club. 50k regular gate numbers and 17th in revenue in Europe makes them a big club whether you like it or not. You can be a big club and win nothing and you can be a small club and win lots - the number of trophies alone does not dictate the size of a club.

How many of that 20 team rich-list will be playing 2nd tier football next year then? In that case I am sure Newcastle will drop off this list. Would that still mean they are a big club though?

No, but don't forget that for the 2005 - 2006 season Juventus were in 3rd place on this list (above Man Utd) with about £200 million turnover prior to their enforced relegation! They immediately lost over 40% of their turnover and dropped to 12th when in Serie B and improved slightly to 11th when back in Serie A again. I dare say they will move up again in the next list.
Newcastle will not be starting from such a strong position as 3rd in the rich-list if they go down. Let's say Newcastle were to lose 40% of their £99.4m turnover in case of relegation? Where would £60m rank them? That equates to the transfer fee for just 2 players for some of the proper big boys.

That's what I said though, all depends if they keep the turnover and fan base going. If they don't and they drop out the top 20 they aren't up there as one of the big teams any more. For me that top 20 dictates who is a big club as financial figures don't lie - well as long as they aren't submitted by George Graham or El Tel
