The first thing you yell when the opposition is given a free kick in a dangerous position is "stand in front" - primary school stuff.

There's no rule saying you must let the other team build a wall..

how many free kicks are taken quickly around the half way line with no whistle blown. No different around the box unless the ref says to wait for the whistle

 

Lille might argue it was un-sporting.....but then so was some of their players trying to get the ref to book the Utd ones.

As an slight aside, the reason a team get awarded a free kick is the because a member of the opposing team committed an offence. When the kick is taken is decided by the team awarded it, and the ref, the offending team get's **** all say

Putting your hands on another players back is not pushing! He fell over to try and defraud the ref. Standard footballers practise.

It seems most neutrals are with me on this, including the commentators on ITV.

 

Clear push on the man then he plays the ball. It's the same principle as a tackle from behind where although you win the ball you play the opponent first.

From one camera angle, I did feel we may have been lucky, however, another clearly highlights the push.

It was a big call, I'll give you that, but it certainly wasn't an incorrect one.

 

Agreed, the other angle shows the push better, and to be honest Vidic made the most of it. Like all players do.

What gets me, though, is that it seems arbitrary whether the ref says to wait for the whistle or not?

Surely, there ought to be a hard and fast rule: either you ALWAYS wait for the whistle, or you NEVER wait.

I remember back in the early 70's/late 60's, a Peter Lorimer screamer from outside the area being disallowed because the Chelsea wall weren't ready. It would have been the equalisier for Leeds, but in the event, they were knocked out. Semi final, too

You would have thought that these footballers would have learnt the fundamentals of balance at a very early age, after all it is a prerequesite of walking. Rugby players manage to stay on their feet even after 2 or 3 elephants have hit them but the average footballer is toppled by a gust of wind, or trips over the paint or grass on the pitch.

I don't like that kind of goal, i don't think it is very sportsmanlike tbh, but its perfectly within the rules, so a perfectly acceptable goal.

And as for Vidic's "dive"? What are some people smoking. Why on earth would he dive there? He's favourite to head the ball away, so why throw himself on the floor and let the defender score knowing most referees would (wrongly) allow the goal? It'd be madness.

 

IF the referee asks you to wait for the whistle, you wait for the whistle, if the referee doesn't then you can go ahead.

This happened when Arsenal scored against Villa - pissed me off, but that's football.

Generally I will notify the team taking the free kick I want them to wait for the whistle, in high level matches this area is grey as I have had situations where the team has placed the ball and taken the kick straight away.
It is not up to the referee to let the defending team sort themselves out, but if the defending team have made it clear they want a couple of moments to organise the wall then it is whithin the referee's discretion to request the attacking team to wait.
Obviously any form of time wasting is to be recognised and punished accordingly if either team is guilty of this.

It is a real shame that some of the unpublished and some what "fairer play" of Sunday League and other grass roots football can't come through into professional leagues but there again they are playing for big money and will do anything they can including bending or breaking the LOTG.

Furthermore:

If you can refer to page 81 of the FFA LOTG book for 2007 (not sure what page it would be on the Engluih version) and take note of the information there. Specifically 2 points.
The first (para 3) being that most times when a FK is awarded to the attacking team around the penalty area a ceremonial FK is conducted.
The 2nd point (para 4) is the following quote:
