You're relyingon the owner at the time using a Subaru dealer that did the map refresh when it went in for it's service. As it wasn't a factory recall so a lot of cars may have missed out on the map refresh back in 2010/11 etc ir when ever it was done.

Well this thread grew some legs! Thanks to everyone regarding their experiences and opinions, in terms of styling I love the STi hatch from all angles. I see one most days which belongs to a vet and he blasts through the lanes past me (I am cycling I should point out!). I think if i can find a forged one then its happy days, not sure I can justify buying one that hasn't been rebuilt and having money set aside for if/when.

I have seen one for sale which has documentation relating to it having had an oil pump and piston 3 failure previously and as such he had to spend £5k on the engine, a lot of the parts were replaced by a Subaru specialist and were upgraded at the same time, including new short engine and gasket kit, uprated oil pump, replacement fuel pump control module, new 3 piece clutch, new timing belt kit, new spark plugs and so on.

Would this be as a result of ring land failure and the work done which is documented, would this eradicate any future issues or is it not the same as being forged?? Apologies still trying to understand what does and doesn't constitute a preventative rebuild/forging on these.

Salsa-king your car is stunning and has sold me even more on the idea. I did briefly push the budget some more and considered an '11 Audi RS3 but just souless - devastating but souless.

Piston 3 failure would indicate it was a ringland failure but unless the new short engine was forged the same issue could arise again with the car

Cheers,
I'm still running on my winter alloys over this summer now... need two 19s tyres and thought I'd wait till next year... plus I've just bought the Forester and spent £££ in the last two weeks having tints, back box... alloys refurb'd lol

Don't laugh.. why not give Scooby Clinic a ring and see if Kev has anything being built and coming up for sale at the right price... often they do.

Looks even better dirty and love the orange rims!!! Thanks for the suggestion, I have just dropped them an email, didn't think to contact an engine rebuilder - i guess they must see them all the time and probably sell one or two now and again.

Someone else suggested Hurst although they don't have anything in my price range at the moment, is there anyone else or even an SN Sponsor??

It'd be worth finding out who did the engine rebuild and what spec it was built to. £5k could buy a very nice engine rebuild.
I really like the sti hatch so personally I'd really be tempted. But then I've never been good with temptation. Plus I've just got my wagon largely sorted (and I've only had it 10 months) so can't really justify another change. So I shouldn't be looking.
However when I've been looking at potential next cars, like you I find the VAG stuff mechanically impressive, just souless.

Great looking car and interesting spec. The FP red turbo is earning a good rep at sensible money - at least it was pre Brexit!

Pistons come in 3 types - (I'm unsure which was fitted in each model/year engine)
cast - fitted in a lot of the standard engines - cheap to buy, don't expand much with temp, so run tight from cold - can withstand a bit of det, won't run big power

hypereutectic - next step up - fitted in the 2.5 sti - expand a little bit and capable of bigger power than cast, don't like det

forged - only fitted in some classic sti's, expand with temp and are loose when cold, hence rattle when cold and owners tend to let car idle for 2-3 mins when cold. are expensive but can run big power

The head gasket can fail on the 2.5 due to the heads lifting, one solution is bigger head studs, poss 14mm and uprated gasket

this info might help you get your head around why things fail. other people might be able to add extra bits or give more detailed info

MY08 sti

Thanks
give a dealer a ring, they should know if a dealer has done it

for piece of mind and an increase in BHP, I'd consider a custom remap by a reputable mapper

Thats why the 2.5 is great for the road, the torque makes such a difference to the drive. it starts going with little effort
