I suppose it would be relatively easy to 'record' the signal transmitted for opening and closing the door (I can do this on my electric garage door using my Sony 'Commander' remote control!! ), so I guess a physical lock would also be good. The signals used by electric garages are not overly complex.
The other thing to consider (if you have room) would be to put in a parking post inside the garage door and concrete it in.

Markys,
I've got what's known as a "Garage Defender" fitted to mine. It's for up and over garages. You bolt a fixing plate to the ground and then there's a removable bar thing that you lock in to place to stop the door from being lifted. It offers a good visual deterant too.
It can be annoying in the rain to take off, but I think it's worth it for a little extra protection.
Looks like this...
It's sold secure so can withstand a bit of punishment.
Hope it helps
Cheers

If you have a door into your house from your garage there is a simple and effective way to secure the garage door. You drill a hole in each of the runner guides and then insert a bolt into each hole when the garage door is closed. The door can not now be opened from the outside. Simple.

If its near your house.. connect the garage doors windows etc to the house alarm on a seperate zone... wouldnt cost much to do...
we have 2 pirs, window foil, and 4 vibration detectors in our garage.. + some other fancy bits, + Navtrak and Clifford Concept 600 on my car.. + padlocked gate.. with steel girder as gatepost... and still not secure.. It all helps.

Large bolts & decent (ie Abus Granit ) locks, backed up with a f/off noisy alarm & strobe. Nothing like a bit of noise, time & attention to put off a thief.
500W lights with a PIR are good too - wouldn't want to be seen eh? Cheap too.
Add another car or two in front of the doors with a dog that barks deeply...
Common sense & visual deterents.

I've fitted these Autolok "stoppa" things to our garage door. They're excellent, IMHO, easy to fit and cheap. I bought them direct from Autolok around a year ago - 35 quid for a matched pair using the same key.
I also have an electronic door opener. I've wired a sensor onto the "stoppa" bar to ensure that I can't try to open the garage when the bar is down. RS electronics sell a changeover proximity reed switch that does the job nicely - email me for more info on what you need to do.

oh, and regarding electric opening. I dunno about your style of door, but there's normally a verrry simple way to by-pass the security - hence the stoppas, and removal of the simple way to by-pass!!!
The motors themselves are normally pretty damn strong, but it's the work-around mechanism that's the weakness.

I had a galvanised steel roller shutter door fitted to my garage - remote opening, billions of signal combinations so it can't be scanned. Six hundred quid well spent, IMO.
I also had an alarm put on for the full belt and braces thang.
