Just had mine done by Max the Clifford dealer at Miximum Impact in Leeds. He demonstrated it with a pound coin and, yes, it does sound the alarm before the glass is shattered. Having said that, though, it all depends on whether the glass is hit hard enough to cause it to shatter with the first blow. If so, then the alarm will still go off, but the window will have been broken in any event.
But, to answer the question properly, yes, the sensor is good enough to detect a blow that would still leave the glass intact.
