Shop around for insurance and you may find many don't insist on them. They're chocolate fireguards anyway, easily overcome with devices readily available from popular auction sites, and even when not, they are easily found and quickly removed. The most popular method of stealing modern cars is with the keys, so the device usually isn't activated until you alert the monitoring company, possibly giving them plenty of time to defeat it. I certainly wouldn't pay for one. You could just as easily secrete a mobile phone under the bumper and track that online yourself.
