remote keyfob
A '97 MY UK car would not have had remote locking. The factory CDL was only operated by the key in the driver's door - up untill 2000MY from what I can remember.
The Sigma M30 cat 1 Alarm/Immobiliser only became standard fitment on UK vehicles from '99 (an additional motor was also fitted to the driver's door prior to 2000 MY).
UK vehicles '99 MY - '01 MY used the separate Sigma AC38 (Subaru # SACC 3461) remotes. These have a single round rubber button approx 10mm in dia witrh a grey Sigma or blue Subaru decal around the button and a round battery pod on the reverse.
UK vehicles from '01MY to date have the remotes integrated into the ignition key.
If your 97 vehicle had remote CDL, then it's likely that an aftermarket alarm system and door motor were fitted, but it could be any brand. I would start with Cobra as they were the alarm supplier to IM directly before ourselves.
Hope that's some help.
