Yep, the ignition key contains a transponder chip although this factory immobilisation system is not Thatcham approved, hence the addition of the Sigma M30 alarm/immobiliser too.

i lost the keys to my van recently. I went to 'Parkers' multi-centre for a replacement. Man behind said he could only provide me with a key to open the doors - but, when I had obtained a 'chipped' replacement from Citroen, he could 'clone' me a back-up one for 20 quid

I had a spare key cut and coded recently (got the dealer I bought the car from to pay for it)
The blank key was £75ish
Cutting was circa £25 (for 2mins work by a grouchy b'stard in Hazel Grove)
Coded at Prosport - who (I think) charged about £20

No mate, I just phoned the local dealer (Robbinsons of Rochdale), the key was £35ish and they coded it in in 2 mins for free as i'd bought it from them, they also did a fault read and clear the memory while it was on the data commander
I know that dealers are expensive for some parts, but I always try them, just for comparison if anything
