I want to attach a relay on a spare output channel, the alarm outputs a negative out when the channel is activated. So to get this to operate the relay do I hang the 12v on the other side thus when activation the circuit is complete and relay is activated....or have I got this completely wrong ?

The terminals on the relay should be numbered.

85 - Neg out from alarm
86 - +12v
30 - + or - , depending on what you are switching. Whatever is on here will come out of 87 when relay is activated
87 - Whatever is on pin 30 will be here when relay is switched
87a - Whatever is on 30 will be here when relay is at rest

There are two types of relay, switching and change over. Both work the same except a switching relay will not have a pin 87a. Other than that all relays are standard.

Don't forget to put a shunt diode on the relay.
As wannaB4 has instructed to you to wire it up in that way, put the band side of the diode to pin 86(+12v) and the other side to pin 85(-).
Best to solder the diode to the terminals prior to connecting the terminals.
