Apart from having the biggest key in the world my MY01 key has an open and lock button only nothing happens when I press them within the vacinity of the car whether the alarm is on or off.

Can't believe that battery would go on both keys as it's obviously only a year old and probably never used as the alarm fob unlocks the doors.

I will probably never use it either but it will annoy me if it doesn't work.

Before I moan at the dealer, it's not anything to do with the alarm (keypad settings etc) is it?

Anyone got the same problem?

Cheers

Chris

AFAIK,

the buttons on "biggest key in the world" don't do anything for UK models - indeed i think that the battery gets removed.

The UK-spec alarm does all that is required, as the standard security (on non-UK) isn't CAT approved.

Cheers MB

This would certainly explain why mine don't work (it's a uk car).

Is this the same for everyone else with a UK car?

Yup, all the same, but the chunky key does also contain a chip that works with the factory fitted imobiliser.

For most countries the factory fit imobiliser is enough, not over here tho, hence the cat1 Sigma is fitted before the car gets to the dealer, over-riding the factory open/close buttons.

does this mean if i put the battery back in the key it would work? this would be handy as i hate carrying the key and the alarm fob around.

Surprised the dealer/person you bought it off did not give you the low down.

I want a Audi style Flick key... Way cool !

Or how about the credit card jobbie of the new renault laguna. If it's in your pocket the car opens as you get near.

you can now get a kit that does away with the alarm fob and gives you a single button on the key to work the alarm. you need a battery and have to recode the new circuitry to the alarm but it works well and all the new subarus are coming with this as standard.

Question

scoobyboy,

this sounds interesting - any idea how much (for the blank key, cutting and programming for the alarm)?

If it is cheap enough it might be worthwhile getting a third key made for general use, and keep the remaining two as spares.

you keep the original key the only bit you lose is the top half which is replaced with a new one which has only a single button you keep the rubber buttons as well but you do have to slice the top off the redundent button so it fits properly. the on ly programming that has to be done is for the alarm. we dont charg for programming this and i think it costs about £45 plus vat. what you get in the kit is a new top part to the key and a little pcb
one of our customers has just ordered 4 to replace all his existings keys!
