jb is on his holidays.
the bastid always seems to p1ss if when there is a gear box to fit
if your car idles all over the place when first fired back up, it will probably be needing a MAF. having the engine out/battery disconnected for a while , resets the ecu and usually shows up a dogie(sp) maf which could well have caused your failure.
I assume you do not have a knocklink?, it is worth getting one fitted for the new engine.

Andy, I am not really up on MY01s, I think the MAFs are supposedly more reliable than the notorious MY99/00 which can cause this situation. Nothing model specific to suggest except to make sure that the fuel pressure, fuel injectors, boost levels and MAF sensor are checked as well as ensuring there are no air leaks. If you want a local contact to check things out for you after the new engine is in, try Job Gevers, Automotive Services, Broomhead Drive, who has the skills and equipment to do this.
Knocklink is a very good idea on any Subaru, after running in use one of the recommended oils on here to protect your bearings eg Motul 15 50 Motorsport.
