Unless your car is an import and thus allowed to use small plates (like they do in Japan) Dont do it.The plod will give you a fixed penalty £30 and force you to change it for a full size plate! Not worth it mate.

Even if you have an import, they still stop you sometimes !! (if you're passing through Aviemore that is). They usually give you 21 days to fix them though - they did with me at least !!
If you do facny them though, try fancyplates.com. They can make any size you want so you can go for slightly smaller letters that won't attract too much attention (mine were very small). I was told by plod that you could cut down the plate as long as the letters and spacing were ok.

Echo the statements above - I had a slightly smaller front plate (80% of full size) and lasted about 2 weeks with it!
Have now got legal-sized letters but the plate itself is smaller, as long as there's a gap between the letters and edge of the plate (1cm IIRC) then you're allowed to do that.

I have a small sticker plate ( Ala WRC ) on the front of my Scoob
But I also carry a larger (Import legal) sticker plate. In case I get threatened?
I can get them made for you if you like?

I got mine made because my FMIC did away with the normal mounting plate.
You can see ME CAR AT www.cruisecheshire.com/iceax/scoobymeet
Pix 57 & 61
Got username on windows too ( Rest and more were on car when imported)
Should be able to get what you want made ( As long as its sticker )

I have had one for about 2 years, pulled twice but only got a ticking off.
One was a traffic car, the other was a panda.
Still carry full size plate incase I need to do some grovelling!!

FYI
I ran with a MINI plate on for around 6 months or so. Got waved down one night by the local plod just to warn me that the traffics were due through that night
I had a couple of strips of velcro on the wee one with a spare 'normal' plate under the driver seat to be attached in an emergency
