Hi m8,
I use AF Nobles for my M99. They blow hot 'n cold. Sometimes they are a nightmare to look into problems, then the next they are as helpful as I've ever came across.
It took me 2 months to convince them my O2 sensor was faulty. John Banks was kind enough to help me diagnose the fault with DeltaDash, then when that wasn't sufficient proof for them, Alan Garrod swapped his working O2 sensor for mine and hey presto problem solved.
I had constantly asked them to check the sensor on their select monitor and complained that me idle wasn't right.
They eventually agreed it was faulty - but never told me how the new this other than accepting what I had told them.
Maybe the Subaru Select monitor proved it or maybe it did before and they couldn't be bothered. Maybe they never even stuck the car on it in the first place.
Anway, enough of my whining. The MY98 has a known manufacturing fault that causes the Piston Slap. You're entitled to get it fixed FOC, so just keep insisting they look at it or take it elsewhere.

ye they seem fine one day and moody the next
i know that when i come and pick the car up from them they will say all is fine, and i am put under pressure to turn round and say no its not fine..i have listened to other MY98 scoobys and none of the ones i have listened to do it so it must be slap
i know i will have a fight on my hands with this but you never know they might just say ye its fecked we will sort it but hay that would be to easy !!!!!
i love it when they say "we are machanics on these cars every day are you trying to tell me how to do my job"...T*ATS..well i know coming from and enginering background that a piston simmying up and down a block is somthing that is not good for an engine and can shorten its life
i just hate the bull they try and give you
rant over
any more A.F and son encounters please post them people

I don't like them, so I chose to drive twice the distance to have work done.
I didn't think they were being honest with me.
They could never give me an estimate of price
I'm convinced they drove my car pretty damm hard
blah blah blah,
I wouldn't use them again. But the showroom was OK, I got a shot of an STi7 with no intention of buying one

Mixed experience of Nobles.
First contact with a Subaru dealer with that nice man Malcolm doing the test drive. However, there was misinformation about warranty, servicing and gearing on European imports.
The service dept charged less and were more helpful and did a better job than Town and County, Perth.
However, when I had a PPP fitted it was overboosting and they scratched some interior trim, but they sorted the former and I left the latter as it was minor. However, when sorting out the overboost they were clock watching rather than taking time and attention over the job to get it right, and also suggested I use 95RON to stop it overboosting.
My car has since not been in the dealer network, T-uk and I do it all ourselves. I don't know that they would know what to do with it now it is so modified LOL so we're on our own.

Agree, it's more Colin and the older bloke in Servicing that blow hot 'n cold.
Only other guy I've dealt with is Derek in the bodyshop. He's a really nice guy and I've plenty of time for him.
They did scratch some trim and fixed it without any questions. In fact, I put a nasty dent in the front door trim when I shut the door on my nice new tweeter They fixed that for me FOC at the same time, so I can't complain.
I just know how to handle them now; Devil you know and all that.

Well said mate. You've hit the nail on the head and written just what I was thinking but couldn't think how to tactfully put it on this site...... if that makes any sense!!!!

Tried emailing them to you but they exceeded your bandwidth.
So have linked them from my site:
Impreza Piston Slap (Cold)
Impreza Piston Slap (Hot)

Hi,
That sounds like my '97 sport which was bought from said dealer and then when I tried to get them to replace the piston they refused. I went to Perth who did everything for me and the car was actually out of warranty. I would suggest you get a second opinion from somewhere or contact IM yourself. Do not let them palm you off.

How then is piston slap repaired?
Don't have my car to listen atm but what should I do if it comes back from the body-shop and I hear the tell tails?
Hopefully it won't, but someone is bound to ask the question sooner or later.

They replace the slapper with a heifer You should know all about that coming from the West
Sorry I forgot my humour pill this evening
(They remove the slapping piston, clean up the bore and replace it with a larger one).

well mate mine does it every time its cold or cold ish but i do think that boxter engines make a noise like it anyway as when it hot its ok but still sounds a bit slappy but i have listened to other scoobys and they sound the same. subaru say that slap can be present on all impreza engines and is what they say a feature of tha car ( I think thats bol**cks myself)
i am having problems with getting it fixed look at what warrenty you have i have the proven warrenty and not an exstended one they are different so take a look.
pester your dealer to get it sorted mine are being ***** about it if you need any info in contacting IM i have the numbers and e mail of the guy you need to speak to
good luck mate hope you have a better time than me

isnt it a feature of all boxer engines?
made worse in 98 by cr4ppy process of making the engines...
in the boxer - the piston slide horizontally... so doesnt it mean its pulled down by gravity - and will wear the metal more because of that?
A F Nobles were ok with me.. few niggly probs - but thats motoring for u
There were helpful in getting my PPP fitted at short notice.
