Time for a brake
#1
Ahhhh, finaly got some half decent stoppers peeps
I know,I know, you have all been saying to me for ages to get better brakes cos the car is currently 300 brake
Well I got a set sent over to me by Jim Theo from Greece
Pending an even bigger turbo , these were a must.
The wee two pots look cack behind the new wheels anyway, and although they held up for a couple of track days with no brake fade, it is time to say churio to them.
I have still to fit them, so I'll put some pics up of before, during and after and put them up over the next few days.

But there wont be much now
They will set off those rims nicely
Nice

Errr,
Yes they were a bit smoky wern't they m8
This is the Godspeed 335mm kit and uses modified OEM 4 pot calipers
SilverSmiths exellent thread on his experience's fitting them.

Got some red caliper paint from Halfords today and some brushes. Planning on doing what SilverSmith has done (red calipers with white Subaru).
Still need to get a tap. £5 if you've got it peeps

The greater braking surface area should give you a big improvement on fade resistance over your originals.
My only concern is i believe part of the pads in the new setup stick out of the caliper to cover the disc surface area?
Unsure how that would affect wear rate?
Look in very good condition for secondhand, did JT fit them to his car?
Scoty..you need your edges trimmed in the garden and I hope you don't fit the pads the wrong way round as in the picture above. Only a numpty would do something like that

I tried to find out more about the 2-3mm lip.
Ian Godney say's it is a characteristic of the kit and not a design fault or something. IIRC the pads are from a DB7 or something, and machined or skimmed down and made to fit by Ian.
JT's never had them on his car, so they are brand new. I think he said something about buying an MY03.
No Alan, those pad's are on the right way in the pic above, are they not!!

The OEM calipers are a bit small, so if you fitted original pads with Ian's kit, they wouldn't have a large contact area on the big disc.
I guess fitting the larger pad gets the maximum contact area, but there's no way to avoid having them stick out from under the caliper.
Not sure how well the caliper can distribute force across the entire width of the pad
Alan,
Do your AP's have a large (300mm+) disc? If so, how much of the pad is in contact with the disc?

Agreed Stef.
It seems as though it is the limits of the OEM 4 pots that cause the edge. If I place the pad correctly on the disc there is no lip.
I have driven Riceys car with the Godspeed conversion fitted and they felt great.
Compaired to AP's or similar, AP's would have a clear advanage, being designed to evenly distrbute the braking force across the entire width of the pad
But, I cant find a soul who has fitted and tested the Godspeed conversion over a peroid of time, and who has anything negative to say.
Maybey a small gradient will form during wear
But that's Ok, Alan will say, just turn them upside down

Hi Ozzy
The pads for my AP's cover the entire surface area of disc from the centre to the edge,as do the originals, whether they are 4 pots, sliding calipers whatever, but the caliper pistons of the AP's are in the centre of the pad allowing as best a pressure possible against the pad.
My concern is the pistons on the original 4 pots are not in the centre but in effect offset, so think you may not get a uniform pressure of pad on the disc, hence possible odd wear rates.

4 pots arrived today (Thanks Andrew )
Now they aint gonna fit unless I do this to them
Who needs alchohol when you've got caliper paint
3 coats later and some steady hand work
Got a tap from West of Scotland Engineering.
From here on, all you need is a bit a confidence.
I managed to get the O/S fitted, just need to do the N/S and bleed the system.
The batteries ran out for pics, so will post some more tomorrow.

Taping the thread is easy if you take your time.
Bled the sytem starting from the N/R, with some 5.1 from Halfords.
Both sides are on now and it look's much better than with the 2 pots fitted, but I won't be able to tell how they perform till August
